Llewelyn's bald patch

Llewelyn has a bald patch on his throat that keeps growing. There is no sign of inflamed skin or skin flakes or scratching. So far, no hair is growing back.

It is definitely neither mites or fungal. He has had three weeks of canesten cream without any effect. Right now, I am treating with GG lavender and myrrh lotion.

Has anybody got an idea what could be causing this and what to do about it?
 
Hormone imbalance? Bacterial infection under the skin? Diabetes? Not a clue! I think a vet is needed.

I have taken him to my vet and she hasn't a clue either!
 
Not seen anything like that before. I would be interested to know if you find an answer. He looks in very good health otherwise (and is such a lovely boy). x
 
Llewelyn's been having trouble with a recurring URI and has lost about 100g because of that, but thankfully his weight has been stable again since he's gone on antibitotics for that (hence the mess around his mouth). His appetite and general health are both good, but he has had quite a lot of ABs this year.

My girls have started suffering from bald patches in the middle of their back at the same time, but those have responded to fungal treatment and are healing off nicely.
 
Poor boy. I'm glad his weight is stable now. Must be such a worry to have illnesses passed round the group. :(
 
How odd, i dont really know, all i could guess would be either a small reaction from all the antibiotics hes had or that its something like a hotspot, where he is excessively cleaning/grooming, but if that was the case the skin would be a lot more sore and inflammed. Keep us posted, i'd love to know what it is. Sorry I'm not much help.

So far I've got this - hypersensitivity. Possibly a contact allergy, have you tried changing the type of bedding/shampoo you use? Maybe sensitive to the ABs?

It may be an autoimmune disease - the body regards it's own cells as invaders and reacts against them. The only treatment mentioned in the book that may help is Glucocorticoid. Apparently they have many side effects so need to be used with extreme care - bit scary sounding!

I got all this from the Guinea Piglopaedia - I've found it very useful, many times.

I'll keep looking through my other books and if I find anything I'll get back to you again.

I have been thinking about self-inflicted, but it is too close to his mouth to really get at. Thankfully, it has not got much bigger over the last week or so.

It may be worth ordering a piglopedia for myself, actually!
 
Have you tried the canesten with hydrocortisone. I found that brought inflammation under control very quickly. If a hotspot has developed it should help.

It does seem a bit odd...is he a good drinker, does he have a wet chin at all after he's had a drink? The other thing that comes to mind is fungal , I know you said not but could it be worth trying different anti-fungal creams if Canesten isn't doing the job? Willa had a bald patch on her neck around an inch under her chin, no other symptoms no obvious cause, so treated for mites (ivermectin) and applied Aloe Vera gel to it, and it did clear up.

Your tribe have been running rings round you since poor Fflur's passing, I really feel for you, especially now with an apparent mystery too!
