Ok so as most of you know, Lois had an operation a few weeks ago to remove an abcess and she has been on baytril for the past 4 weeks as shes got puss in the wound, so i had to keep it open and drain it everyday, give her the baytril and keep it clean in general which ive been doing.. but this is the 4th week now and the puss still isnt clearing up, the dose of baytril is 0.25ml x 2 daily she isnt on them atm as her course finished on friday, ive got her booked in at the vets again for tomorrow morning but I can't see what else they can do all they are doing is prescribing more baytril, which obv isnt helping her after a month of being on it.. I asked the vet if it was ok for her to be on it for so long and she said the main priority was to get rid of the infection and lois would be fine I'm just worried that all this antibiotics are doing her no good, she lives inside so doesnt have to battle with cold or anything.

Is there another type of antibiotics i might be able to mention to my vet thats stronger or may help more than baytril, as baytril seems to be the answer for everything at my vets.. Lois is fine in herself she's still eating fine, although her poop does have a crusty white matter on them which I'm a bit worried about..

any advice would be really helpful, thanks xx

i can't really advice any antibiotics for lois, i can only tell you want so many antibiotics did to zoe. zoe has had 6-8 injections of terramycin, and metacam for pain, ultra sound, surgery, and now she has a very upset tummy and her poops are soft. perhaps suggest to your vet to give lois a probiotic as well which puts good bacteria in lois's tummy that antibiotics kill. i would definately be asking for something else if the baytril isn't helping, especially as there is somewhere on this forum a thread where some people's piggies have had baytril and have passed away. it is rare so please don't worry. have a long chat with your vet and see if there is any other antibiotic they could use. or PM maryh and see what she or her vet suggest. good luck and hugs and cuddles to you and lois. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I have some pro-biotics here, my vets have never once mentioned pro-biotics to me, luckily i have the info from here.. I dont think my vets know much about small animals, like i said baytril is the answer to everything with them! thanks for your help though :)

This is a long time for a gp to be on Baytril. There is no other antibiotic that will help.I have never found antibiotics all that usfull for abcesses. The trick is to back flush thoroughly and squeeze the puss out,you need to do this 3 times per day for the first 2 days, then twice a day till the pus is gone.A neck abcess should be clear of puss in 7 days or 10 days at the most.Collodial silver sprayed over the hole will help,High Potency Manuka packed into the hole is also good for clearing the pus.Use diluted Hibiscrub and warm sal wate for back flushing.I alternate these,Hibiscrub twice a day and salt water once. Vitimin C given by syringe for a few days will boost the immune sytem to aid healing.

We had this trouble with Jumbo's abscesses after a week with no response from baytril he was given Ceporex (different antibiotic)after 11days one abscess is nearly gone and the other one is getting there. they are healing closed at them oment but if the larger ione does not clear up it masy have to be healed open.
Try some extra vitamin B12 in oxbow critical car and it really kick startes appetite O0

Love i'm sorry you're still having problems with this dam abscess :'( :'( :'( I agree with Mary keep up with the flushing and squeezing of the area you need to keep this clean, each time it fills up with puss it means it's got to be cleaned the infection is obviously still there >:( I know you probably think you're being horrible to little Lois but you're really helping her O0
All our very very best i do hope it clears up real soon, probably the location is not helping >:(
(((((((((((((HUGS)))))))))))))) and piggie kisses from us for little Lois and for you too :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:, i know how you feel very very frustrated :(

hoping little lois is feeling better today, hope all goes well at the vets. i would definately question being on baytril for so long, then poor little zoe had 6-8 terramycin injections over a space of 6-8 weeks plus metacam for pain. if you are not happy with this vet go to another vet or email maryh and talk to her vet who emailed my vet in australia. good luck. hugs and cuddles for you and lois. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

we went back to the vets this mroning, I saw a guy I havent seen before he seemed nice and seemed to know what he was doing a bit more than the others, he opened it up a bit more and gave it a good look at, there was only a tiny pin head amount of puss in there this morning, he gave me more bayrtil and told me to clean it with salt water everyday, and when i see no puss for a few days let it close up, carry on with the baytril and then it should be ok, luckily they dont seem to be chanrging me for the consultation charge either so its only costing me for the baytril :)

Ive booked her to bk next week just incase it hasnt sorted its self out.
