My other guineapig passed away yesterday due to the heat. My family and I were aware that they can’t be too hot, so we always take them out of the conservatory during the day, but yesterday it was (at max) 28°C, and my guineapig (Mocha) sat outside in the sunlight, whilst the other guineapig (GrayGray) lay inside the shelter.
The guineapigs never seem to play around with each other or cuddle(?), tho they would sit together.
So yesterday whilst Mocha was not in a good condition, on his side and breathing super heavily, GrayGray walked past and went back under his shelter. And when we left Mocha in the cage for a bit (cos some website said to let the other guineapig see them one last time and that) GrayGray would poke his head out the shelter and still ate and drank.

Is this normal? I read a lot of posts saying they may lose an appetite and that, and he didn't even check up on his friend. GrayGray does tend to be less social, he hides more and doesn't let us touch him as much, whereas Mocha would come out for us more and let us stroke him more. I get the guineapigs and them having their own territories and that, could it possibly have been that GrayGray didn’t allow Mocha into the shelter at that time or can guineapigs not sense it when it’s too hot?

Sometimes they know when their friends are ready to cross the rainbow bridge. And so they may have already said their goodbyes. If he’s still eating that’s good. I would switch to weighing once daily at the same time.

What are you planning regarding a friend?

I see, thank you for the information :) and I have heard about weighing them but he doesn’t even like being touched much (a stroke on the forehead at most). We’re planning to find someone who also have male guineapigs, to give him to, tho we do not know how yet. We know someone with two boars but I don’t think putting him with two boars is good(?). I have looked at rescue centres but usually they have very low numbers of guineapigs and the thought that he could be there for months with no one picking to buy him with another guineapig is upsetting, tho he is a good looking guineapig. Also, i would not know how he’s living then.

No putting him with two other boars is not good - there would be fights and it would potentially destroy the bond between those two piggies. boars need to be kept in pairs only.
The best thing is to surrender him to a rescue centre. They would ensure he would be bonded (potentially neutered and bonded with a sow) and rehomed. You would know that he was going to a good and properly checked home.

:agr: Please contact rescues near and far and see who is able to take him on. The sooner the better.

As for weighing, it’s an important part of keeping an eye on their health. You can herd him into a hide or box then pick him up that way. There are members on here whose piggies don’t like being touched. They find a way around it as I’m sure you will too 😊

That’s a good idea thank you!

Please take him to a rescue, He would certainly find a friend and a good forever home. Don't give him away to just anyone, there are some cruel people out there.
There is a list a good rescues on this website.
