Hi all

My oldest piggy died Monday 😢evening & left behind our Gus who I rescued to originally keep her company when our first piggy died.

Gus lives in huge c&c cage in our living room & is adored by my 2 year old daughter.

I’ve always had the opinion pets are for life & hate the idea of passing him on again but do you think that’s what would be best for him in the long run? Or shall I keep him give him as much love as we can & hope he lives out rest of his days happily with us?

I do not want to get another pig so that’s not an option. I know a lovely lady who has offered to take on Gus who has several piggy’s for him to bond with & I totally trust to care for him amazingly.

What’s the best thing to do here for Gus Gus?

Any advice very appreciated xx

I think only you can answer that yourself to be honest.

Sorry for your loss of your older piggy, it's quite a dilemma when you feel as if you could be doing a roller coaster of exchanging pigs over many years. You can of course adopt an older piggy to more of the age of your remaining Gus. will your daughter miss Gus? would you miss Gus? I'm often thinking about the message it sends to kids also, although to be fair your daughter is very young and will probably forget in years to come.

I'm probably not helping here...just some random thoughts. As I said, it's really up to you but I also think it's nice that you know a lady who would take Gus on for you.

first off I am sorry for you loss. Please feel free to leave a memorial post for the piggy you have lost in our Rainbow Bridge section of the forum.

@Mother Hubbard offers good advice above. how old is Gus Gus?

its hard to say as he was a rescue but from what I was told he is about 5ish now. Treacle was 6 1/2.
I would miss him & so would my little girl but then I thought is that me thinking of myself rather than him by keeping him ?

So sorry for your loss.
Would fostering be an option?
That way you can arrange companionship for Gus without finding yourself caught in a never ending cycle of piggies.

So sorry for your loss ---I think you should keep them I have only one guinea pig and she is very happy but she has lived alone all her life and they live for maximum 8 years I think so you could keep him for the last few years just my opinion do what you think is right hope you make the right desicon ;):nod::D:luv:

Sorry that information is incorrect there is no definitive shelf life of a pig. One of our members here had a pig 10yrs old. Age is based on multiple factors just like humans.
I don’t like the idea of a lone guinea pig. Isn’t solitary confinement a punishment in the US in their penal system?
