It's been two weeks since Furby's cage mate Bert passed away. He seemed to be ok but this past week poor Furby has been hiding a lot and doesn't seem to want to come out from his corner home. He's been eating/drinking but he's not his usual happy self

I've been to our local rescue in a bid to find him a buddy but sadly there were only pairs available. We are on the list for a date at Wheek & Squeak but I do not know how long this will take. My poor boy seems a little depressed. He's even avoiding being handled as much and just tries to snuggle into any dark hole. This is very unlike him. He's normally a noisy, popcorning, snuggly boy. Could it be that he's lonely? What should I do?

Thank you, in advance...

Hi, I am sorry to heat Bert has passed. I have only just lost my Piggy monday and all of mine (3 sisters) are at the vets. So I cant advise or share advice yet. Maybe someone else could advise of if they think your piggy is appearing just sad? or if he could be poorly? I hope all goes well. x

I don't think he's poorly. I've checked him over and he seems perfectly healthy, I even clipped his nails and brushed his hair today; it's just he doesn't seem to have any get up and go? :Ayociexp113:

He lost his pain in the bum buddy that would get him out of bed in the morning. We're all still sad about it. Bert was a great piggie. Thanks for the reply Wiggie x

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear that Furby is not doing too well at the moment. If he is healthy and eating etc it's very possible that he's still grieving. There's another thread about bereaved guinea pigs on the forum at the moment, and apart from giving him lots of things to play with, one of the suggestions on there was to give the single pig a small cuddly toy (with all sticky-out bits/things that can be chewed and swallowed removed) to snuggle up to. I'm going to try this with my recently bereaved pig tonight. Could it be worth a try for Furby while he's waiting for a new friend?

HTH

Jo

I would weigh him every day for a week or so to see if he is loosing weight, you don't want a situation where he's not eating enough due to pining for his friend. Slow down of digestion is not good for guineas. We gave a small soft toy to our bereaved pig & he loved it & cuddled up on it to sleep, it's worth a try.

Are there any more rescues near you or could you explain to Wheek & Sqeak & find out if they will see him sooner in these circumstances? How old is Furby? If all else fails & he is an older male he may well accept a baby. We very easily bonded our nearly 4 year old male Willow with a 7 weeks old baby male, in fact they bonded themselves, we just introduced them & they loved each other :).

Best wishes to Furby x
