I could possibly be getting a Peruvian and a merino in the very near future,I was wondering what the best thing would be to use in the base of an indoor cage and what would be best for the sleeping area?
Could i use those puppy Pee pads that they sell for house training pups on the whole floor area ?

Hmm I don't think bedding would be a problem so long as they where brushed thouroughly everyday.
Although I know it would be annoying picking all the stuff stuck in their fur out.
I'm sure pet pads would be fine but they'd have to be washed alot and would get worn easy.
Hay is always good for bedding because its warm, soft and guinea pigs eat ALOT of hay.

This is abit of a tricky one aint it :|

When my texel cross had long hair, (he gets it trimmed quite short now) I found that shavings and things always used to get stuck and I was forever combing him, which he hated! I use vet bed now and its really good stuff though would be a good idea to keep the hay area separate because hays a nightmare to get off the vet bed. Puppy pads would be fine to use, I think quite a few people in America use them, just have to keep up with the washing.

Hiya I know a lot of people dont agree with sawdust..etc etc etc...but I still use it on just over half of my cages and I have quite a few longhaired piggies...(but not of the curly variety....I have shelties/peruvaians/coronets etc)

I brish mine everyday while I'm watching neighbours and they dont really get matted/sawdust stuck to their coat....when you take them out, you ay have to brush a bit of bedding off....but thats about it!

No matter what you use it needs to be absorbant as you dont want their back end to absorb the pee ::) ;D

I think hair like a texel may involve picking out some sawdust...but I dont have this prob with my shelties/perus/coronets :)

Those puppy pads sound like a great idea! I never heard of them before, loads less work!

Ooops just seen the postage..$75? where did you get yours from?

OOps i hadnt noticed i had put a USA link on I just did a search on ebay to find some i could show a pic of them on. ::)
I bought mine from the cash and carry months ago because we breed Mini dachshunds and find them easy for litters of pups running around.

If you use puppy pads I would reccomend putting towel or fabric over the top in case it get nibbled. The disposable ones are quite flimsy.
I use continence care bed pads covered with fleece! (The kind of thing you'd find in a hospital or nursing home.) I just stick 'them in the washing machine with the fleece every couple of days. I have a coronet and an english short hair, suits them both.

The only bad thing about bedding that they can't dig is you have to keep picking up lots of poo
otherwise they get damp and smushhy and all horrible
I tried using crate liner pads but they got filthy
I had a peruvian and they were fine on shavings, newspaper & hay
he never had more bedding stuck to him than the shorthairs (who always had loads up their bum) :)
