I have a pure white Peruvian pig and he normally used to be able to keep himself lovely and clean and never noticed any dirt or muck on him but for the past few months i've noticed that his bum and belly have gotten all stained and mucky and blurghh :/ I usually try to get his hair trimmed but I haven't gotten around to it lately. Cold that help solve the problem? It just it keeps getting all tangled and greasy and mucky :/ what should I do?

do you know i was thinking exactly the same thismorning when i put my Sheltie out in the run, she is long haired and is all stained around her bum. So tomorrow its bath and out come the scissors xx

oh yes.........regular butt cleans rolleyes sheeesh these guys can so muck themselves up! :))
I can't bathe at the moment cause my girl has an URI...so i am thinking of doing a spot clean....gonna use a washer/flannel and clean her up tomoro!

same here, i currently have stan on the sofa and am disgusted as his disgustingness, in fact i was going to start a thread myself as i dont know if i should bath him because he was snuffly earlier in the week. I do trim his hair, but maybe i could/should trim it more. Also its so white or maybe i should say it was :(

i tried using a pet wipe, but it hasnt done anything except wet his hair!

Hes not impressed

I was considering giving him a bath but i've never bathed my piggies before and don't know how to haha. And yeah you can see in my picture how white he is but all of his bum and belly is horrible and yellow :( I tried wipes and everything but that didn't seem to do that much. I might book him in for a trim soon then because I don't want him to have messy hair around his bum and stuff in case it might cause infection of some kind. I cant do it myself as he buckaroos haha
His hair is always nice and tangle free but he keeps getting the soiled hair tangled up around his feet...I once found him in such a state of knots I chopped off all his bum hair and he was just naked there for a little while :P

My long hair gets a Mucky bum. He will not let me come near him with a brush so i scalp his rear! the otheres laugh and point at him!

I have the exact same problem with Miss Piggy for some reason sitting in your own poo and wee is quite a fun game for her :)). She had a hair cut yesterday including her other end (isn't far off bald in them parts now :red) and will be getting a shallow bum/ belly bath when I can be bothered.

oohh photos of that please, that would be hilarious they would all look worthy f having guinea pig ASBO's lol

where in devon are you? If you're close to me I don't mind showing you how to wash/trim, etc... :)

yeah, the only way to keep them 'clean' is to trim them :)

I have a pure white peruvian too and I half bath her once a week and trim all the hair around her back end:)

Mm yes a guide of how to would be handy :) I have never bathed piggies before and it would be helpful to know the do's and don'ts to make sure that its a pleasant experience for all involved hehe

And does anyone else have a long haired that buckaroos and hates to be touched on anywhere apart from the head? :{ because mine does it all the time

you wash them the same way you would a dog, just avoid their head.

if you have a bath with an overhead shower, then use the showerhead, just put it on low but warm and soak them all over. if you don't have an overhead shower then just make up a shallow bath, like 2-3inches of water depending on how old and big your pigs are, and then pour water over them with a jug or tub. Once they're wet lather in the shampoo (any kind is fine) all over their bodies, apart from their head, just make sure that you wash the full length of hair - you can pick them up to do this, just hold them securely...and don't wear your best clothes! :))
wash out the shampoo the same way you soaked them, repeat if necessary. then gently 'squeeze' out the excess water (I run my hand firmly down their bodies to force the water out), then towel dry them.

It's easier at this point to brush and trim them then to do it when they're dry. Cut out any knots and yucky yellow bits, carefully trim around their 'bits' and between their legs. Do the bums as short as you can, and then I trim the rest of their hair to table length (ie. when their sat on the table their hair just reaches it). Easy-peasy :))

...mind you, I have had a lot of practice with my 15 longhairs! :))

oh, and the bucking...yeah, it can be normal. I have a few who hate being groomed (one sow does actually try to bite your hand off!).

It can either be due to them being left too long between grooming sessions, and then because their knotted it reinforces their dislike of being groomed. Or it can be because they have skin issues and it hurts them.

If the skin is fine, then all you can do for the other is brush them daily...but sometimes that doesn't work and they still don't like it.

I've just finished doing my lot today, one sow was squealing as I ran the comb through her hair, but it was going right through and not even catching! so I know I wasn't hurting her, she just likes to protest :))

Oh thankyou :(|) I'm going to try it out tonight I think, hopefully he doesn't fidget too much haha but ill get my mama to help :) and oh my :O 15?! that must be a handful hehe how do you do it?

I like making life difficult for myself! lol :))

most of mine are pretty good, they tend to keep themselves quite clean, and those who aren't I keep short.

Why do they HATE people cutting their hair? Smokey looks like she is going to kill me when I try to cut her hair! Why is this?

awkwardness!? lol :))

I put mine on a board and then place them so that their bums hang off the edge, you can snip their hair without actually touching them (little bit at a time), they tend to sit still then, especially if you put food in front of them.

to get right underneath them I hold them so that their head is in my armpit (not quite, but you get what I mean) and hold both their feet in my hand. If you tip them up, bum towards your face, you get a perfect (if slightly suspect) view of their bum and bits - so you can very carefully snip round everything. This takes quite a bit of practice, so don't cut them too short at first (you need a really small pair of scissors as well) as it's very easy to accidentally snip something important.
I usually then flip them belly up, spread their legs and carefully cut between their legs - again you have to watch out for their nipples.

It's all about being confident in handling them, not letting them faff you around - if they start bucking and jumping around you need to put them in their place, they are very intelligent animals and will figure out that if they do 'X' then you can't do 'Y'
One of my lads decided to bite my wrist yesterday when he was in a compromising position being trimmed, just purely because he didn't like being belly up, I have a very small mark, but he got trimmed - I didn't stop!

10 hutches? my goodness lol I suspect you have your own house then :P

My piggie never wants to stay still which makes him hard to trim :/ whenever I try to touch him anywhere apart from his head he just buckaroos and kicks his back legs up then runs off to a hidey hole :/ lol ive never had a pig do that...but ive never had a long haired either lol is he just not used to me touching him or is it something he will always have?
I normally try to get my boyfriend or someone to keep hold of him while I do it lol

lol - no I rent...the landlord just doesn't know! :))

he will probably always be like that, how often are you able to groom him? I know it makes it difficult to keep on top of their coat when they're like that. It is easier to get someone to hold them whilst you're trimming/brushing them, my partner's not always around to help so I normally end up manhandling them into compromising positions! :))

oh thats lucky then :P My mum says whenever I move out I have to take my pigs and rabbit lol which will be fun :(|)
Yeah I have always had him do it and I never really understood why :/ hes ok once you get hold of him he settles down a little lol
