Eliza has been on and off baytril for months with regards to the problems that she has after her eye removal op. When she is on baytril, she has fibreplex.

When she is taking it, she is on 0.4ml once a day.

I'm just concerned about using it long term and what problems could arise?

i'm not sure to be honest, but i think the only issues would be tummy issues (but you are covering that with the fibreplex) and possibly it may get where it doesn't work as effectively because she is so used to it? not sure how much that happens and with what meds though. sorry, not sure other than that x

I've heard long term use of baytril can affect the digestive system and upset their tummies.. I am not sure how true this is but I hope you find out!

Minky has been on Baytril 2.5% in 2 x 0.5ml doses a day for over 4 months apart from 4 weeks when Zithromax was used but didn't seem to make any difference. She's OK on it apart from a few issues mainly in December when she had terrible mouth ulcers thought to be a form of thrush caused by antibiotics. She developed these 3 days after been on Zithromax but not sure if it was this or the previous 6 weeks on Baytril. They cleared up in 2 or 3 days as son as she was prescribed a 2 week course of Itrafungol.

Until mid January she was also prescribed Zantac, Emeprid & Cisapride to help her stomach against the Baytril. As well as these she was on non prescription Fibreplex 3 x 1ml a day & Bio-Lapis 1/3 sachet mixed with 16ml water per day. These have all been reduced and she now only takes either Emeprid or Cisapride alternating for 2 to 3 days then 2 to 3 days off. She also has 1ml (1 notch) of Fibreplex & 1/4 sacher of Bio-Lapis with 12ml of water per day. She's coping well with the current meds & no bad side effect for over 6 weeks now so I'm quite happy to continue as we are.

Thank you for the replies. Thankfully Eliza has never had a problems with soft poops or digestive problems but then she does have probiotics. She has just been moved back on to Septrin as my vet does vary it for the reasons mentioned.

Eliza is only on antibiotics at the minute as a precaution to prevent an infection as she keeps ending up with an open sore where she scratches her healing eye socket :(

This guinea pig will be the death of me! x

Sundae has been on long-term Baytril due to recurrent UTIs. Luckily, it does not seem to bother her gut (one of my previous piggies got diarrhea from it.) The vet told me it wouldn't hurt her, but may become ineffective over time and we would have to look into other antibiotics.
