This is our fist post so I would like to say hello to all.

Last week one of our two guinea pigs, Scruffy Jack, suddenly passed away. This has left our remaining one, Silky Tickle, very withdrawn. They were brothers.

We do not know what to do for the best and have been given conflicting advice from different sources. What we would like to know is can we introduce an older friend of the same sex to keep him company or is it advisable to get 2 very young playmates for him.

Our guinea pig is approx 4 years and is a sheltie. lovely natured and very placid. They are kept indoors.

Advise would be very welcome.

Thank you

I would recommend a baby boar for him at age 4 thay are usually nice and mellow and a very young boar will not have developed territorial behaviour. This is what I have done in the past.

Hello and welcome by the way

Thank you for that. Do you think two baby boars would be better, as is anything happens to our 4 year old then a single one would then be alone. However, would two baby boars become territorial againgst our exsiting one.

Trio's are possible but much trickier, I find boar pairings the safest bet but I'm sure others will be along with advice soon

Hi and welcome.

Sorry to hear about Scruffy Jack passing away.
Yes, I think you are right in considering getting a friend for Silky Tickle (great names :))).

I would also say that a trio could be more problematic. A baby boar, perhaps of the same or similar breed, would hopefully be ok.

Have a look in the "Rescue Section" as there are some babies on here at the moment, but not ready. It all depends where you live also, as rescue centres do homechecks just like the RSPCA and some only let folks adopt them in their local area.

Keep us posted.

I agree with what's been mentioned. Another possibility could be a spayed female :)

Hi all

Thank you all for your advice. It was invaluable. Yesterday we became proud owners of a little boar. The good news is that Silky Tickle (don't you just love kids) has taken to him immediately and they spend their time preening each other. Thank you all very very much.

Just wondering....
What are you going to call the new addition to your family

hello and a lovely welcome to the forum from me in OZ :)
at this time i've not got a furrie i just lost our beloved boy not long ago but am hoping to have more soon, at least in the new year!
So i know how you're feeling it's very sad and so hard to watch another piggie go thru the greiving process 8...8... every one of our furries is precious so a passing of one causes many upsets...... RIP to your little sweet Scruffy Jack run free little one at the bridge, have fun popcorning and munching on the green grass in the meadows xxxxx
CONGRATULATIONS on the new arrival can't wait to hear the little one's name (lol so love the others) xxxxxxxxxxxx

awww love the name, hope they are still getting on great!

And welcome xx
