Hi everyone,

From today I am looking after 3 girlie pigs for someone at work & they called yesterday to tell me one is very poorly & isn’t eating.

Has been to Vets twice and given generic metacam & baytril but no real idea what is wrong... (this is why I don’t use a local vet!)

Anyway, I am syringe feeding this 4 year old lady & her stomach is gurgling & making gassy sounds. She isn’t interested in eating at all by herself.

She has also been getting gripe water 3 times a day 0.3ml.

Any tips on what I can do? I’d love her to still be here in a fortnight when they return but it’s not looking great. I’ve been here with mine before - wondering if anyone has any new tips/advice?

Thanks!

Ps. Forgot add. Apparently this started on Monday when this little piggie had some diarreah (sorry can’t spell!). She seems uncomfortable when going to the toilet to me.

It sounds like bloat or digestive upset. Were you given an gut motility drugs?

Hopefully it should settle down in a few days so keep up with the syringe feeding. If she's still not good by Tuesday I'd take her back to the vet.

No just gripe water altho she has had a pro biotic earlier in the week which has just stopped. I’m just doing another syringe feed now & herbelly isn’t making any noises aa it did earlier but she’s still hiding away & not eating by herself...

Actually I typed that & heard a little gassy noise... typical!

Piggy much happier today & eating on her own. Am still syringe feeding to try to get her weight up.

I think she had a tummy upset & being given anti biotics & metacam she probably didn’t need haven’t helped! Looking much more hopeful! X

Spoke too soon, she’s lost 15g which has amazed me as she literally nibbled all day yesterday & isn’t so keen to eat this morning altho has managed some coriander.

Frustrating!

@PAMELAKT How's her poop output?

You're doing the very best you can until her owners are back, keeping her fed, medicated and hydrated.

You may find a rise in weight tomorrow. 15g isn't much and it can take a few days before you see the result of them eating better.

Sorry only just spotted these! She has done really well - going home Saturday & eating by herself now. Weight is not bad - mainly maintaining tho. She is now eating lots of hay, and veg on her own altho she is still quite selective. She is also now eating grass.
Pretty pleased with her really as she was really poorly - and she is pooping for England Altho it’s a little a liffle soft today - may be an increase in eating grass tho..

Just FYI - little pig is girl went home happy & is still doing really well... Yey!
