Emergency Looking For Advice Please! - Uri / Pneumonia

I asked about it but she says that it's for animals with fluid in their chest which apparently Betty doesn't have? She has inflamation and infection? The x-ray didn't show any fluid so I'm kind of confused?
Yeah she's now on - Baytril 0.3ml twice a day, Metacam 0.2ml once, Romaxon (or however you spell) two 1/8th of a tablet twice a day and now some Critical Care 0.25ml! Poor Piggles :( her chin is such a mess lol but the nurse showed me how firm to be which was good :)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, if she has been diagnosed with pneumonia it surprises me she hasn't been given the diuretic. Because as far as I'm aware, that's what pneumonia is really?
(Had it myself).

But yes, I'm rooting for her an hoping she starts to pull through !

Glad the nurse showed you to :)

Do you have any probiotics?

I don't think pneumonia causes fluid on the lungs in all cases - either that or its a general lower respiratory infection being classed as pneumonia. As long as they've done the right investigations to determine that there isn't, for which they have done x-rays, then it seems a logical decision not to give a diuretic.

Was she on any antibiotics before? What is Romaxon? And 0.25ml of critical care seems very low, is it just to supplement her diet to encourage her to eat?

Sorry for all the questions! Pleased that the nurse was able to show you how to be firm with syringe feeding Betty, its so much easier to show someone in person. :)

If there is no sign of fluid build-up, then a diuretic is not necessary. But good that that has been checked.

Ah okay, that's fair enough then.

Sorry it's Ronaxan lol i can't read xD it's a stronger Anti-Biotic I think? Yes have some Probiotics which I mixed into her Critical Care, I think the 0.25 was just printed on there? I gave her about 1ml and it seemed to stimulate her appetite coz she ate lots of nuggets and hay when we popped her into her "Intensive Care" cage as I now call it! So that was good, her breathing has slowed down a lot since earlier and she doesn't sound as congested now. She's having a little snooze after eating more nuggets from my hand there. I think they're saying pneumonia but I thought that meant there is fluid in the lungs but, if she doesn't have any then maybe it's what they're calling a severe URI? X

Ok, yes - a bit of research tells me its an antibiotic commonly used for treatment of URIs and similar conditions. I'm uncertain of the use of that and Baytril at the same time, just going to tag @Pebble for an opinion on that... Sounds like she is doing better already however! Keep it all up until the complete course of antibiotics and painkiller is finished and make certain to weigh her daily (same time each day if you can) to get an idea of whether she is getting enough food into her. If not, increase the intake of critical care for her to keep her weight up. Its great that shes still keen to eat though :)

The Vet nurse actually advised to use both of them in order to help her recovery time :) weighed her today and she is 440g so she's lost about 10g! :( but that's since she last got weighed at Vets4Pets i think which was about 2 weeks ago x

Gosh :( some pigs can just be smaller, my Tanky is small, like really. My friend also has a pig that's smaller and he's all good. :)

You're doing amazing, and honestly I know she is small, but 10g in two weeks is neither here nor there, not too dramatic!
So just keep the munchies up :')

20-30g can be the difference between a full or empty bladder :) she may have a little difficulty putting on weight while she is poorly, so hopefully she will start to pile it on after she improves.

Poor baby, I hope she recovers soon. You're taking excellent care of her, so the chances are quite good. Fingers crossed! xx

@Piggly...i could do with the video please re wriggly piggies...
I have a very scared girl due to her history that rescue didnt notify me about at time, and she screams and tries to get away , so this could help me in future should i need to :)

I'll see what I can do! If you really do struggle even with video guidance I definitely recommend going to see a vet nurse who will show you. Will get a vid posted up in a bit.

Syringing meds/feed: wriggly pig edition!

Theres no easy way to syringe feed a wriggly pig but there are ways and means to make it easier. Click the image for vid.

Really good vid! Will have to have a go with Betty tomorrow, had my other half help tonight again and you're right with just going in and getting it done. If I have that frame of mind then Betty settles whereas if we're both faffing and unsure then she starts squirming even more. Update on Betty by the way, she is so much better than yesterday! She's vocal, being cheeky and moving about more (not in her cage as she just stays in bed mostly but when we're handling her, or just have her out) and being inquisitive. She's still eating but not as much as I'd ideally like but I'm glad she hasn't lost her appetite. Her breathing is basically normal now and there is no rasping or crackling noises. I am beyond happy! She's made me so proud and I'm glad that we didn't just give up on her, what an awful mistake that would have been! X

Haha! I know! Made my day too xD I'm excited now she's on the road to recovery :)
When she's all better we can finally go "Piggy Dating" and try and find her a friend :)! At long last! Poor Betty has had a tough time so far lol

She has bless her, piggy dating would be good! Once she's fully recovered I think it's like two weeks you have to wait?

I'm so pleased, you should be proud of yourself too :)

Keep us updated with her progress? :) x

She's back to her normal self :) onviously have to keep meding her but am really happy to take her back to the Vets to let them see her :) do you guys think she could be one of those Guinea Pigs that just keep getting sick or that she hadn't recovered from her original illness? X

I'm so pleased! Go Betty!

When she's better, and over this one thing I think would be good for you to do is note her weight once a week same day/time, for a month? See what her weights doing. Would that be okay to do?

She'll probably thrive with a friend too.

Also as long as the infections cleared she should be okay :)

Yes definitely, she's putting on more weight which is great she's up to 445g lol poor wee thing xD! Should adult females be around 800g? Or is that more male? I don't know if she'll ever be that weight! But I'd love even 600g! X

How old was she again 5-6 months? Are you positive on this? :)
My 5 months old boar is currently 852g
My other boar when he was 5-6 months was about 700g to 800g.
So for me, she is very small, which is why I've said about the weighing her for a month after the illness to see how she goes.

Adult weight 12 months + ideally is between 900-1200g.
However if they have health implications this can be lower, or just general build can play a role in this - basically they're just smaller but fine.
i.e. Frank who is an adult male (1.5-2.5 yo) with health complications is below 700g, my friends piggy (male) just small in size is 800g something and is healthy, my other friends piggy with slight health implications but otherwise healthy (female) is 714g.

I'm not 100% positive, I know Pets at Home can get G.Pigs in that are 6/8weeks old so, she was out in the Shop Floor in late December so if she was 8 weeks old then, now she could be 5months? She's a very fine build and always has been since I've seen her, always been tiny.

Hmm yeah about 4-5 months.
As said, once she's over this I would monitor the weight weekly for a month and see how she's improving :)
