Looking for Friends

Hi guinea pig friends. I need some help, thoughts,opinions. One of my sons rescued a guinea pig that had been neglected for a while. It's mate had died in the cage, but we don't know how long the situation had been like that. So now our little friend has been with us for a few weeks and is settling in quite nicely. He's an adult male, possible a couple of years old and is a delight. However I can't be with him all day and I would like to find him a friend, but all the pet shops I've spoken to have said he will be too aggressive towards another pig, too terratorial and it just wouldn't work. When I go into to greet him he's always chatty and runs up to me as though he misses company. So does anybody have advice or are the petshops right? Would a spayed female be more readily accepted and how would I go about introducing them, over what length of time and how would I know if it's not working etc.

Where are you in the country Sam?

Your little guy could go to a rescue and 'date' some piggies to see if he can find a friend he likes. That's the easiest way to find him a friend with help and advice and support afterwards.

I dated my piggy when his partner died earlier this year and he loves his new young cagemate.

I agree with MerryPip - a lot of rescues offer 'boar dating' where your boy can go along and pick a friend of his choice.
Search the forum for boar dating and you should find more info.
If you post your location someone may be able to recommend a nearby rescue for you,

Boar dating is very commong among the rescues on this forum and someone I'm sure will be along shortly to advise you on this. Telling us where in the country you are will help us find you the right rescue :)

Spaying female piggies is very tricky, and is not usually done without good medical reason (in fact there is only one rescue in the country that routinly spays females and this is in rugby) It is more common to neuter a male, as the procedure is easier and has less complications, so maybe considering neutering your boy is an option?

However if he has had a friend before, i see no reason why he couldnt be paired with a new boar friend.

You have done a wonderfull thing rescuing the guinea pig and people on here and very friendly, please feel free to ask for any advice you need, and goodluck in your search for a piggy friend!
 
It's just like humans, he just needs to find a friend he likes and who likes him. Boar dating is the way forward!

Thankyou so much for your replies. I never knew about boar dating, will try that as soon as we can. I live in Leeds and there seems to be so little here in the way of wildlife/pet sanctuaries. I'm amazed. This is a really brilliant sight & forum and I appreciate your help. My boar's name is DaVinci ~ my son named him. But he's cool. Talk again soon. Sam
 
i agree with the above post definately boar dating, my boar is 5 when he lost his friends and he took to a little baby straight away and you hear them chattering away its so nice to see and the baby may think he is big and brave but you should see him run and hide under daddy dylan.

I was nervous but its great to see your old piggy have such a new lease of life and with a rescue you have the support.
