so i have a foster pig who has been having dental problems for a month. he is missing a ramus of mandible on the right side (i have my own ideas about how he got a broken jaw. i think someone hit him, as jaws are pretty robust), and after he had his molars ground down he got an abscess on the side he is missing the jaw bit. he seems to be healing up well from the abscess, but now his left eye looks infected, red, slightly puffy. ive been doing terramycin, which is what the rescue told me to do, but tonight his eye looks like there is a swollen nictitating membrane. the internet tells me that cavies have a rudimentary nictitating membrane, and it only shows up when there is some medical issue. is this something anyone has seen before? i will try to get a photo, but he's a struggle bug.

oh, and Archie's cagemate Wren died of probably a stroke a week ago. She was 7-8, so not surprising, but i think he is pining. He is only 3-ish. I admit I'm worried that between having terrible dental issues and losing his girl, stress hormones might be making him more susceptible to infection.

Eyes are classed as an emergency therefore you (or the rescue) need to have him seen by the vet rather than home treating him. Eye treatment is the same for all animals so he can be seen by a general vet. Hope it’s sorted soon. And :wel:

so vet tomorrow. there are no general vets here who will see exotic pets. he lives in a cage in my house, i am morally obligated to get him medical care, whatever it costs me.

They’d turn them away even for eye issues? Things seem quite different! Hope he’s seen soon.

All the best. Can you contact Portland Guinea Pig Rescue for their vet recommendations? They are local to you and are regularly dealing with guinea pigs in bad state, so should know which vet in your area is most piggy savvy.
