Hi,

I'm new to the forum and dont have any guinea pigs YET! I was going to get some very soon but then decided to wait a few months because a friend of mine has pretty much begged me to take on her bunnies which she can no longer keep and I said yes.

Anyway, long story short today I was telling a elderly woman who was buying guinea pig food that i am looking to get some soon. We had a little conversation and i told her about my plans and then my friend having to re home her bunnies. Then the woman said "you can have mine if you want" LOL. Her and her husband have two. They are 2 years old and very well looked after. The couple go away on holiday to wales alot and its unfair on the piggies to keep being left with the neighbors so she wanted a new home for them.

I dont know if she was secretly vetting me before asking but I said i would love to but I would have to speak to my husband first as we would be keeping them in the house until my bunny/piggy shed is ready.

So looks like I'm gonna be a piggy mummy soon. Wooohooo...

PS. The piggies and bunnies are going to be on separate levels in the shed (insulated shed). They will not be running around together.lol.

Welcome to the forum. It is lovely you are going to be having guinea pigs.

Thank you! I'm mega excited! Woooohoooo!

Do you have any tips on being a piggy mummy?

Something my books wont tell me.lol

I would say the best thing is to be as patient as possible. They are very timid and nervous little things and it takes them a while to get to know you. Do you know about their dietry needs and housing? Where will they live? I do not know if you have heard of c and c cages but they are great. You buy these grids from amazon, ebay or b and q and connect them to make a cage as big as you want. I have one and think it is so much better then any cage as they have loads more space.

That was a happy chance that you met that woman!

I'm about to build a c&c cage for my two new-to-us piggies, so that they can run around on the floor for part of each day. The rest of the time they'll be in their Ferplast home (I hate to call it a cage...) They'll be house-pigs, except when/if we're able to let them have a wee play around in the garden, again in the c&c run, but this time with it covered over for safety. Just thought that might give you some ideas...

There are lots of helpful people on here who will tell you all you need to know!

Congratulations on the new pigs !

You'll have to post lots of pictures when you get them !

The best way to be a piggy mummy is to have lots of veg and give lots of love, they don't ask for much more (:

Thank you for the replies. I'm not sure what they are housed in yet and so not too sure what I will have them in for the little while they are going to be in the house. I like the C&C and so if they dont have some sort of run I will defo be getting some of them.

Its just great I met the lady! I am soooooo excited, even more so when I see your avatars.LOL. They are 2 males and there names are Pete & Paul.

I have been reading to give them plenty of hay, nuggets, veg etc but I want to see what the couple have been feeding them first.

What brand piggy food would you guys recommend? i read excel is a good one, is that right?

Also would love to know what are your piggys fav veggies?

I used Burgess Excell and really recommend it. It is a great complete food. All guinea pigs like different vegetables and it is a good idea to offer a wide range so they do not end up picky!

I think it is that food they are currently being fed, either that or the pets at home own brand. If it is the pets at home then I will slowly convert them over to the Excell one.

I have just spoke to the lady and we are going to her house in a hour or so to see them and discuss how she has been looking after them etc..

I cant wait to see them! Its a blind date.LOL. Excited. Wooohooo! :)

Oh wow how exciting let us know how it goes!
What random coincidence maybe it was meant to be!?
Id reccomend looking in the 'housing' section and checking out the 'sticky' threads on all the different types of cages and hutches as there's some brill pics for inspiration and ideas!
