Well last night while cuddling Cosmos noticed something white about 1mm to 2 mm long wriggling in her fur. Double checked on the net and in guidebook and it seems they have lice. I had thought we had left lice behind when Katy started senior school (anyone with kids at primary will know head lice are a bane).

Checked with Sportbilly and Wiebke (many thanks) and a BIG bottle of Lice 'n' easy ordered. (Experience with kids reflect the idea get biggest bottle of stuff possible).

I thought about where they could have come from, and when we were away (exactly a fortnight ago on Wednesday) we visited a children's farm and Katy and I snuggled a guinea pig. Now although we washed hands, it never occurred that something could have transferred to clothing and then later to the piggies.

This was the only contact (via third party) ours had with other piggies, the neighbours on site were never handled.

Now piggies are sulking as not being allowed floor time until shampoo has arrived and full clean out can be done. They have been told to expect baths and they are not happy.

Oh dear, poor piggies with the threat of baths hanging over them! Still, hopefully it will clear up the lice, and piggie life can soon return to normal!

Mine have had them too, despite not being in contact with any other pigs :( The vet said that they can get them from the hay.

Two baths with lice n' easy did the trick (a third bath is sometimes necessary). Thoroughly disinfect the entire cage, in particular any wooden toys or hideys as these can harbour the eggs and result in the pigs becoming infested again.

Good luck. They are more of a nusiance than anything, but are easily dealt with.

Oh dear Steve! Sorry to hear about that, fingers crossed you get them zapped ASAP.

Is the lice and easy a Gorgeous Guineas product or an over the counter?

Its a Gorgeous Guineas product as recommended by Wiebke. I went for the 500ml bottle to cover the 4 and also knowing how much Full Marks we used to get through with the kids.

Thanks for clearing that up Steve, i was weary thinking it was an over the counter product. Fingers crossed it all clears up soon.

xx

Hope you can get it all sorted out. Poor piggies with baff times coming along, they will not be pleased. Glad Wiebke could recommend a shampoo for you to use.

Hope your gang are lice free soon

Downloaded the instructions from Gorgeous Guineas, oh boy they are gonna be so narked by the time I've finished. Have decided to do each one in the bathroom sink one at a time and then onto a clean fleece in the bath. Once all done I can blitz the cage while they sulk in the bath.

I wonder if it's the weather? One of mine suddenly has them, no contact with others other then their herd. They have been out on the grass last few days so wonder if they can get them from there? Another big bottle of lice and easy ordered too. Nightmare! Baths due shortly..oh joy! Fortunately I have 2 who actually like being bathed :))
