Hey guys. I posted a while ago about losing my 8 year old guinea pig, very sad day for us all. Her cage mate Machete seemed to be doing fine, but now in just a few months, I'm finding her at the vet with little hope. It's all so very strange.

After I bought a new baby, I quarantined her for a week but saw no signs of problems so introduced them to each other. Then about two weeks later, Machete presented with URI symptoms. I took her to the vet, she got liquid Baytril & I gave it to her for about two weeks & things seemed to be fine. We suddenly had to go to NY (my boyfriend & I) for an unexpected life event that required us to be there no matter what was going on. I thought she was fine, so I thought nothing of it. I had someone feeding them & from what he could see, they were both eating fine. Now, she's lost almost a lb since her last visit which makes me extremely sad, hopeless & thinking she wasn't doing well at all while she was here.

I'm blaming myself horribly. Not only is the URI an issue, we found a little while ago that she had an ovarian cyst, or what we think is an ovarian cyst. Now, with all these problems, I'm hearing the C word. Has anyone been in this situation & found there piggies turn around with antibiotics? The doctor said she's not "knocking on death's door" but she is very sick. I'm extremely worried & upset. Just looking for support..

OMG I am so sorry .... I cant offer any advice as I dont have the experience/knowledge but just wanted to give some support - its not your fault - please dont blame yourself or anyone else....
Big hugs...really hope Machete is going to be okay
xx

oh how sad, I'm sorry you are going through this.

I have no advice either, but someone will come along and help i am sure.

Sending healing vibes for your baby x

You've got heaps of support on here love XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Is the new addition letting Machete eat ..... being older maybe she's a bit slower to the veggies? just a thought.....
Has she been having probiotics when on her meds, this will help her gut flora, or you could make up poo soup....this is fresh poo's from the well piggie and then fed to the sick one. Cut up all her fav foods into smaller pieces and mush up some pellets, and offer her lots of hay cut into smaller pieces too.

Update

Before I go into everything, quick question on nursing piggies back to good health. How many of you guys have been through a nasty URI with your piggie & been able to get them out of it through some good care? I'm trying to stay optimistic!

We aren't out of the woods yet but I must report that from what I can see, Machete's doing a little bit better today. We luckily ended up crossing out that possibility of cancer as the doc ended up doing a small, quick USound, finding out that it was indeed fluid-like & cystic. PHEW! Therefore I really think it's all related to the respiratory system, I was so worried when they began throwing out the possibility of cancer spreading, yaddayadda.

So today she seems a little brighter, she got an extra dosage of Baytril & some SQ fluids. She was a tired little girl last night after the vet visit so I imagined she wouldn't show too much to me other than being tired.

Now, on the topic of eating, I don't understand why she seems excited to eat, goes over to the lettuce & the hay, nibbles then walks away from it. It's so very strange. This morning she was uber excited about her cream vitamin-c treat the minute she heard the bag open, ran over to me, began to eat it, then mid-way through dropped it & ran back into her little cubby. So strange. She went to the water bottle today too, just for a little bit, but the fact that she WENT to it made me feel better.

Keep your hopes up.

Not Me personally but I know a pig that got over pneumonia and a collapsed lung the pig now only has one working lung but continues to thrive it was a long battle to get her back to health.

Pebble and Catandthepiggies have also dealt with nasty URI's I believe with good results so all is not lost hopefully they may comment further.

Healing vibes to your little one x
