Bonding Advice Needed🙏🏻

Recently I lost my eldest boy (Percy) far younger than I ever expected, which now means my other boy (Winnie) is alone. He is 18 months, there was a 3 week age gap between them.

I’ve never been through the heartbreak of losing a guinea pig until now but I understand that it’s important for me to find a companion for Winnie, who seems to be doing okay so far but I know how quickly these guys can change.

My boys were well bonded, bought from a pet shop and then cage mates for around a year and a half. Percy was the more dominant pig until he became poorly but I’ve never had issues with them fighting or either of them being aggressive, even when reaching maturity.

Winnie is not neutered and ideally I don’t want to put him through surgery. I’ve read that it’s best to bond him with a younger male but have also read it’s best to bond with an older male! I’ve also been looking into spayed females (which I know are rare to come by)

I’ve done a lot of research online but I’m hoping to hear personal experiences who have been in this situation, dos & dont’s etc

I’d really like to rehome / adopt so any recommendations for rescues, companies etc is really appreciated

From one grieving piggy mum - thank you in advance🥺💔

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Yes a younger boy can be the easier bonding. However a bond comes down to compatibility, not age.
The safest way to find a new friend is with the help of dating at a rescue centre. They will help ensure compatibility and a successful bond.

There can be a wait for dating so it’s a good idea to get yourself on their waiting lists as soon as you can - I know that feels hard when you are grieving though.

A key thing will be cage size - you will need to be sure they your cage complies with their sizing requirements before they will consider you for
