Bearing in mind one of my little piggies is the normally the noisiest, greediest (& would be the first one to be eaten in the wild due to lack of shyness) little in existence she has recently been far more quiet & not obviously eating much veg. Will take her to the vet but cant get there till late next week so wondered if there were any pep up things i could give her in mean time? Recall reading something ages ago about feeding some solution or other for something, specific i know, via pipette or such like? Normally hates being, & squeaks to the hills, when being picked up but was quiet as yesterday when cleaning out yesterday so wondered if there was anything to do in meantime & without a mass of steroids in my cupboard? :o

Dont know how old she is as a rescued one but I've had her over 18 months, has 2 friends & no other changes in their set up. Could it just be a cold as there was a nasty human one going round the other day when she first went quieter? Did think it could be something with her teeth or such like but nothing obviously long or sore when i had a look....

She wouldn't have caught a cold from you - they don't transmit.

You can try and give her Critical Care; but if at all possible have her seen by a vet sooner.

Have you felt her belly? Is is hard and bloated and painful to the touch?
Guinea pigs stop eating if something is severly wrong with their guts or digestive system. they can get twisted guts as well, like humans.

I'd agree, I'd try to get to the vets sooner rather than later if you're concerned about feeding.

have you watched her eat? if so did you notice anything different? If not, do you know if she is definitely eating? I only wonder because sometimes with cereal and dry food it can be difficult to tell if they're eating or trying to.

It's easy to check guinea front teeth but back ones are harder, and a vert can check best. I've always found that if there's anything teeth or eating related wrong with a piggy you're far far far best to get it sorted whilst they're still eating, if they go off their food I've always found it almost impossibe to get them feeding again.

Always best to be careful, not trying to scare you! :)

The cause of loss of appetite can be anything from dental problems to bladder stones.

belly isn't obviously hard. Main difference beside not squeaking the house down at the slightest ristle of plastic bags or fridge opening & jumping up side of cage like spiderman er pig (Si resists homer simpson spiderpig singing) is that she still comes up to lettice leaf, tomato etc but rather than sinking teeth in aimlessly & lethargically puts mouth onto it then stops. Definately not her normal self so i am going to see if i can get her into the normal vets tomorro & make the time/journey.

Cheers

just got back from a different local vet & looks like it's a abcess in mouth so given a pain killer & a few oinkments + some critical care & advised to try giving baby food as well. See if that goes down & keeps pig digestion going & any better by Monday. Then either do a bit of work in mouth or er not... :( Fingers crossed, she seemed to like the ribena + medicine.

Cheers folks

AWWW Bless her. Glad you found a vet who was a help though.

Mine have taken the meds and ribena, it goes down a treat doesn't it?

I hope she picks up soon, keep us informed!

I am glad that you didn't wait.

Hopefully, she'll feel better soon and be back her boisterous self.
Sending my vibes xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

silly question but what do you normally mix critical care up with presumably just water till a paste consistancy? I have "supreme science recovery" but dont have the leaflet for mixing up & cant find distructions on their web site. Baby food didn't go down so well so going to try some of it if i can work out best way to mix.

I haven't got the proportions, but just add water little by little until you get the consistency you wish.

sounds like a plan, just wanted to check it wasn't ment to be mixed with anything random.

Cheers

Sadly little Daphne is now an EX piggy :( , Si's sick sense of humour reverts to monty pyton dead parot sketch. Had a last cuddle with her this morning, while trying to get medicine etc down her but within an hour she had breathed her last. Glad she had a good 18 months feeding her face with me after being mistreated so all good :D

Whilst her death was possibly unexpected, there is nothing else you could have done for her. With perfect hindsight, it is more than likely she died from old age, natural causes.
