Hi all,

Looking for some advice re my 1 year old boar. About to finish 10 day spell of antibiotics after being diagnosed with ear infection. I got a second opinion after 4 days as didn’t see any improvement. Symptoms were loss of appetite, head tilt, shaking head, walking in circles and withdrawn. Started syringe feeding at same time started on antibiotics and he was initially really keen but after a few days had no interest in syringe food. He continued to lose weight and over the course of 1-2 weeks went from 1.35 to 1.04.

Anyway, so got second opinion on Thursday and the vet thought it was more likely parasites deep in ear. Gave me worming paste to give him every day for 1 month and anti inflammatory for 1 month. I stepped up the anti with syringe feeding and he seemed to find his appetite again. From 1pm on Friday I no longer had to syringe feed, he was eating regularly and a good amount.

Popped back to vet yesterday and he was happy with him. I mentioned that he didn’t seem to pooing but he couldn’t feel any cause for concern in his stomach although noted it was a bit empty. Despite eating and drinking a lot between Thursday to Saturday he had gone from 1.06 to 1.04 which I wasn’t so concerned about as was confident the weight would creep back on. He went from strength to strength yesterday and was eating and drinking a lot and this continued through the night. I was so pleased.

Something then changed this morning and it is like he has gone backwards. Very withdrawn and not had any dried food or water, just munched on some carrot and spinach for breakfast. Still no sign of any droppings. Seems a little lifeless.

Going to go back to the vet tomorrow but thought I would see if there any suggestions from the group?

Please step in with syringe feeding and watering asap!

It needs a vet examination re. what is going on with the ear and and the guts. What is his weight today?

Yes, hence I’m taking him back to the vet tomorrow for another check. This is however, what I took him in for on Saturday. His ear is clearly giving him bother as he shakes his head often. His balance is better than it was a few days ago which I’m hoping means parasites is the correct diagnosis. It has been 3 days of anti inflammatory and worming treatment now. The vet noted an improvement between Thursday and Saturday. Shame he went off his food this morning as he seemed much better. I am of course syringe feeding him food and water which i started as soon as he hadn’t eaten for a few hours this morning. Again, he is happily eating veg so he hasn’t lost his appetite completely. He just had about 5 syringes of food too.

His weight is 1.07 according to my scales to i would say no hange in 24 hours. Checked his sleeping corner when I got him out to eat and there was a few bits of relatively hard dry bits of poo.

Any advice from anyone would be fab
