We had 2 brothers, Barry & Paul. We've had them for 3 years and they were somewhere between 3 and 6 months when we got them. Sadly Barry passed away today. He seemed fine until monday night when I noticed his breathing was a bit laboured. Took him to the vets on Tuesday afternoon and he was given antibiotics. Unfortunately this morning he appeared worse so back he went this afternoon.

The vet took a chest X-ray which seemed to suggest either fluid on the lungs or possibly a tumour. He was given a diuretic to try and clear any fluid and a further X-ray was arranged however when the vet went to get him for the x-ray he simply rolled over on his side and lost consciousness. The vet called us immediately and we raced back. He was still breathing when we arrived but within a minute or so of us arriving he passed away.

My wife and I are both devastated by his passing but happy at least that we were both with him when he went. I'm glad he's no longer in any pain and that it was very quick but we're worried about his brother. They've never been apart for more than 36 hours and we're concerned about him being lonely.

Not sure how to attach a picture on here but once I figure it out I'll get one up for you all to see.

I'm sorry you lost your piggy and at such a young age.

I would imagine your left behind piggy will need a new buddy as they do get very lonely.

Where abouts are you, perhaps someone could recommend a rescue for you to consider?

We too are sorry to hear about your loss, RIP Barry.

not sure of any rescues in Glasgow, but i am sure some people will come forward to help that are from that neck of the woods if you will consider a rescue piggy x

Hi so sorry for your loss ..... I think the SSPCA in Glasgow has guinea pigs looking for new homes just now - I'm always on looking ( even although I've no space for any more piggies just now ) You can see what they have on their Internet site. Hope that helps. Not many places around Glasgow that I know of that does rehoming .... I had to travel quite far to a rescue to get my boars ( but I think that place has shut which is a shame ) ..... Good luck .

Really sorry you lost your piggie. Very sorry for your loss.

RIP Barry
x x

I am very sorry. I have lost piggies to sudden heart failure and found it a very upsetting experience; it can strike at any age.

The best way to find a new friend is by boar dating at a rescue that offers this service, as the choosing and bonding with a character compatible mate happens under expert supervision, which minimises any risk for you and maximises your chances on another stable relationship. It is worth going that bit further afield.

Becklen GP Rescue are still going in a smaller way than they used to; some of my guinea pigs are from them and I have made good experiences with them. I don't know whether they do boar dating nowadays.

The other recommendable English rescue I know offers to bond boars of all ages is North East GP Rescue in North Shields: http://www.northeastguineapigrescue.co.uk/
