On Tuesday late night I arrived home to a very quiet piggie who had hardly eaten or drunk all day, he was cold and my boyfriend had him wrapped up to try and keep him warm but he was very vacant. Kept him as comfy as possible, gave him fluids though couldnt force him to eat and rushed him to the vet first thing in the morning, he was dehydrated and very listless so was admitted to the vet hospital. He was given fluids and force fed, dosed up on antibiotics and painkillers and put in an incubator to try and raise his body temperature. He was kept under constant monitoring but the emergency vet rang me around midnight to say that nothing was helping and that he was getting worse, and he passed away at 5am this morning.
We are gutted, he was only 2 years old and vets have no idea what caused it. It happened really fast and he was too sick for any real investigation. Giving my other boy a lot of cuddles today - boyfriend and I both changed our work shifts so we could care for him today if need be, so now we are just hanging around the house being upset! Going to go buy something nice for the other boy now to get out of the house. Will miss my little guy so much :'(.

Really sorry for the loss of your little boy *big hugs*

I am very sorry for poor Pickle! It is a very frightening experience when one of your piggies is going downhill so quickly - you have done everything you could!

Please give remaining boy a soft cuddly toy. If possible, leave him with something that smells of Pickle to snuggle into for comfort while he is in deep mourning and withdrawn. Hopefully, he will come out of it in a few days.

If you can, consider "boar dating" your bereft boy at a god rescue that offers this service; that way, he has the biggest choice of potential friends at minimal risk for you to end up with two boars that won't get on.
Full or residential boar dating means that boars of all ages can be paired up with each other, provided that they are character compatible. Any bond will also undergo a stress test before a return home. This is the safest, but very time consuming way of ensuring a very stable bond, and not all rescues offer it.
Speed dating is usually performed with a young, often prehormonal boar, but there is a certain remaining risk of a later fall out when the youngster hits the big hormones. Still, by letting your boy make his choice about who he likes best, the risk is much smaller than pairing him up with a baby of your choice!

Wiebke - they had been living separately after a fall out anyway, I was saving up to get Pickle castrated so he could have a girlfriend :(. Silvio - my remaining pig - likes being alone and couldn't care less, but Pickle was more lonely. They had supervised time together but I'm sorry that I didn't manage to get him a friend before this happened :(.
