Hello everyone!

I havent posted on here for a long time however i have just noticed something quite distressing and need some advice.

Sydney my 2 year old boar wasnt eating his lettuce and i noticed his teeth didnt look quite right. On closer inspection he has lost one which appears to be growing back. His other one is very long and cracked.
I am very upset as i do take good care of them and shocked i havent noticed this until now.
I feed them plenty of veggies and lots of vit c plus they have wooden houses which they gnaw!

I have an appt at the vets tomorrow but in the mean time can any one advise me on anything i can do?

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Thanks for reading!

Hannah

Don't worry about it. It's going to be ok if you start feeding him. Out boar always has chipped/broken teeth - he gnaws on wood like yours. Chipped one more just this Friday, so I'm feeding him right now :)

Don't wait, start to syringe feed him straight away as guinea pigs have very sensitive digestion system, they need to have food very often (every 3-5 hours). And if you have small kitchen weighing scales watch his weight a couple of times a day, feed him either some recovery mix or ground pellets mixed with water until he starts eating again (get 1ml syringes at the vet's as you're going already).

Does he not eat at all?

Make sure the vet doesn't give him general anaesthetic if the tooth needs to be evened out a bit.

Piggies seem to lose their teeth a lot. Of all my nine piggies, one always seems to have a broken tooth. It will come back fairly quickly. Just defiantly keep an eye on how much he's eating.

Also, beware of overgrown teeth. Make sure if there are any overgrown, you need to get them trimmed.

Hope everything goes alright at the vet! :)

Thank you!
By the time we had got to the vets he has lost both his teeth. We have some recovery feed which is loving!
Still dont know what happened but will be keeping an eye on those bottom teeth, making sure they dont over grow whilst the top ones are missing!

Thanks for the advice. Nice to know Sydney's not the only one! =)

A Sad Day

Hello everyone, i just wanted to thank every one for their advice!

Sadly on Sunday i had to come to the heartbreaking decsion to put Sydney to sleep. It was so sad but i hadnt really a choice, he gradually got worse and very thin. He could eat and something more systemic was suspected by the vet in the end.

Luckily his girlfriend, Chloe has been accepted by my other two Austin and Beth!

My vet did say if teeth suddenly change then systemic disorders and mouth cancers should always be considered. Sadly this was the second vet i visited, the first one accused me of dropping him!

oh I'm so sorry to hear this i never realised tooth loss could be serious :(
