Hello

I have just joined your forum as I was looking on the Internet for some advice with a problem that I am having with one of my Piggies.

He is about 4 years old and is an Agouti

About a year ago he lost one of his upper front incisors, I took him to CCT and was shown how to trim the bottom theeth untill the missing upper re-grew.

Trouble is the missing incisore never re-grew, so I regularily trim the bottom teeth as they now obviously grow un-even.

I am now finding that the remaining two lower teeth are over wearing the single top tooth and that is getting shorter and shorter.

Has anyone got any thoughts on the best way to tackle this problem.

Many thanks

I found this picture which shows what its like

Welcome to the forum, sorry to hear you are still having issues with your guinea.

I have had a sow with a missing incisor, hers was extracted though so I figured it wouldn't grow back! She lost a lower incisor so I had to file her upper incisors frequently to help wear them evenly.

When you say the bottom two are overwearing the single top tooth, do you mean the bottom ones are getting longer and the upper one is getting shorter?

How often are you trimming the bottom teeth? Is your piggie eating ok?

Thanks for the quick reply

Yes the lower two are wearing the single upper so the bottom two are getting longer and longer.

I try to trim the bottom two weekly but the top one is so worn that anything more than a quick rasp on the bottom two leave them too short for him to eat and he is slowly losing weight, he is now down to 994gm.

He can still eat but obviouly not enough.

Thanks

I understand the situation, and I see your reluctance to trim/rasp the lowers any further.

Are you syringe-feeding him? Have you been to see Vedra again since last year?

Hi

I am supplimenting what he does eat with syringed mashed pellets.

I am due to see Vedra in a couple of weeks time so will ask her for an oppinion on him.

Thanks

That's good, be warned she may cut the lower teeth short to correct the problem, though so you may end up having to fully syringe feed him for a bit. Vedra referred a guinea to me at the start of the month who'd had his incisors cut very short due to reverse occlusion - where the lower incisors curved in front of the uppers. He needed syringe-feeding exclusively for almost 2 weeks as he couldn't pick any food up for himself, and with his third week here started eating independently.

How much are you syringe-feeding him? If he is continually losing weight, he may not be eating enough, either by himself or by syringe.
