Hi all

I weigh my sows regularly. One of them has never lost any weight, every time she is weighed (which is weekly, maybe a bit longer) she has always put on weight, apart from one time when she stayed the same.

But my other girl on 3 occasions has lost weight:
-The first time she had lost 3g from the last weigh-in 10 days before, but then continued to put on thereafter.
- The second time she lost 8g, I weighed her again the next day and she had put on 4g. Now 6 days later after putting on the 4g she has now lost 13g! Is this something to worry about? Obviously, I will weigh her tomorrow to see how she is doing.

xx

Hi, Don't worry 13g doesn't sound like a big weight loss. a loss of 30g one day could be that she's been to the loo... What you are looking for is a trend e.g
day 1 - 20g loss
day 2 - 30g loss
day 3 - 30g loss

That is when alarm bells would start ringing.

The important thing to do with weighing is weigh regular, we weigh twice a week, weigh at the same time e.g before or after tea. Record all weights in a book.

If piggies are poorly I weigh daily so I can keep an extra eye.

What does she weigh at moment and how old is she?

Oh right, ok then..I thought 13g was loads :red

I keep a record of weights and I weigh them once a week most of the time, but probs not at the same time of the day everytime, I will start doing this.

Jewel (pig in question) is about 8 months old. I am in work at the moment and can't remember her exact weight...but it is 900something grams. I will look when I get home later and post her weight yesterday and her weight today.

Floss my other girl weighed 966g yesterday - this is quite a bit heavier than Jewel.

It's alright! Yeah 13g is absolutely fine... our girls tend to fluctuate by 20-30g a weigh either up or down...
Both there wieghts sound healthy and within normal range for their age.

Thank you. That's reassuring!

Just a question - how big/heavy can sows get then? Or does it depend on what breed of pig they are?
