I’m awake in the middle of the night because I woke up hearing my guinea pig Pip breathing loudly. Is this most likely a URI or can other things cause them to breathe loud? I can hear him from metres away and so am worried.
I tried to take a video but it didn’t pick up the sound well for some reason, it’s not crackly but more like a honking noise and ended up only lasting about an hour and this morning he’s fine.
If it only lasted an hour then hopefully your piggy just breathed in a bit of hay dust or ate too fast, piggies have very narrow sinuses and inhaling a bit of hay can produce dramatic honking that usually clears in an hour or so after a big sneeze!
Keep an eye on him and if it becomes regular or he seems less active or out of breath then contact a vet, but piggies can often snuffle up food too fast then honk like geese until they have a big drink or a big sneeze- a couple of mine honk at every scatterfeed because they are greedy pigs and their appetite is bigger than their snouts!
