Just popped in today because I haven't been in in ages and theres a pig in the back of the shop all on his own and he has a very obvious case of mites. Big bald patch in the middle of his back with scaly, dry cracked skin but no open sores yet that I could see. Feel so sad for him, would really like to take him but I don't have the room unless I could pair him with one of my boys but theres no guarantee that would work. I didn't recognise the shop assistant but theres a girl who works there that I get on well with, I might go back tomorrow and give her some advice.

What do you all think? Should I just try that or see what they say to me possibly fostering him, with only a limited amount of space. Really want to help him but can't really see a decent solution.

Re: Loughborough pet shop

Not only might he not get along with your piggies, but if he has mites then they may be passed on. Sadly, I'm sure that you can preach until the cows come home and they won't do anything that will hurt their profits. If at all possible, I would try to make room for him. Let them know how much vetting he needs and how expensive it will be for them. Then volunteer to take him off their hands for them.. Good luck!

Re: Loughborough pet shop

Hiya, is it not illegal to keep animals in that state? :tickedoff:

They must know somethings wrong with him? >:(

Thats so sad, but its just difficult trying to remember that every one we buy is replaced by another! I'm sure if you informed someone the shop would be forced to get it treated? If nothing is done, how can you not take him? Id be exactly the same as you! Just be careful your other piggies dont catch anything should you take him home! O0

Cruelty Line Link to lots of useful sites and numbers regarding guinea pigs and some others.

If the animal is actually for sale, then yes, it's against the law. I would also ring your local council (environmental health) as these are the people who actually issue the pet shop license and set the conditions, and are therefore the ones in a better position to revoke it and set 'improvement points'.

Re: Loughborough pet shop, what to do?

Well I went back with the intention of enlightening the shop assisstants as to his plight. I cannot find the words to express how angry I was when I left. Apparently they knew he had mites,  :tickedoff: 666) they realised he had it a couple of weeks ago when they were going to put him in with one of their rabbits. They said they had been spraying him with something to get rid of it but didn't know what it was called and the shop had ran out of it so he hadn't had any more. She did make a point of telling me that you could buy it in any other pet store. Why hadn't they gone and got some? People make me mad! She also said that it was only a slight infestation and would be really easy to get rid of if I wanted to buy him. I asked if I could have a look at him so she got him out of his cage and handed him to me. Must admit I was relieved to feel that he is quite solid and not all bone, but his mites were a lot worse than I hought. I inspected him right there in front of her and pointed out that a minor case of mites shouldn't really get to the stage were you can see the animals skin through his fur. It also shouldn't get to the point where he's scratched himself so much it's drawn blood and started to scab over. There were a few small scabs on his shoulders. There is no way that he has had any treatment, if he'd had treatment he wouldn't be in the state he's in. Woman from the shop was starting to look a little dubious at this point. I also pointed out that he has static lice ( I think thats what you call the ones they can pick up from hay). At this point she said that if I wanted I could take him without charge or they would send him back to the breeder. Needless to say he's now at home with me in a temporary cage until he's better and then I will try to introduce him to one of my boys. I've put a thread in the health and illness section saying how I'm treating him so if anyone has any suggestions they would be most appreciated.
I'll post pics as soon as I can get them, he's going to be such a beautiful boy when all his fur grows back in.
