Hi!
Behind my piggies hutch I found lovely huge hedgehog! I gave it some lettuce, parsley and a pile of hay to munch on and to snuggle in through the cold night! If I will ever see him again I will call him Gilbert!lol! My little sister wanted to keep him as a house pet but its wild and he stays wild. He could have a family! After I took the pics I left him alone. I'm gonna miss wee Gilbert!

I love Hedgehogs! we have several visit our garden every night, the most I have seen together is 3.

I feed them sunflower hearts, hedgehog semi moist food and mealworms.

Aww how cute. Ive only ever seen a hedgehog in my father in laws garden. I'd live outside if we had them in our garden

Hedgehogs survive well on meat flavoured cat food in jelly (I use felix) and water to drink.. A hedgehog once set up home in our garden and had a litter of 5 babies. We discovered them snuffling about in the ferns and come out onto the lawn in the evening. It was a precious time. I put a hedgehog house in the bushes after that but nothing ever came to live in it :( :( Also I once found a MASSIVE hedgehog walking around in circles when I was walking my dogs very early in the morning. It had worn away the grass into a muddy circle so I knew it was going nowhere and in trouble. Suspecting an ear infection, I fed it and gave it a drink and took it to a local vet who administered antibiotic and pain relief but said that it didn't look good.. It wasn't an ear infection actually - it appears it was in labour gave birth to 4 babies in the night! It was then taken to a local rescue :) :)

aww bless that's so cute baby hedgehogs  I got home the other night around 11pm &there was an adult scuttling about the grass verge :)) dont see many of them about these days.

I would try giving them tinned dog food instead of cat food (as cat food is a lot higher in protein &can give hedgehogs diarrhea).
If u find any slugs or snails they would be a welcome meal (as long as u or the neighbours dont use slug pellets:( )

Lol typical u provide a nice shelter for them &then theyre ungrateful &dont move in! :s

@Piggie buddies I can't see any pictures :(
Xx

Hi GPTV,
Thank you for your advice. I have previously been linked to two hedgehog rescues who both recommended cat food in jelly (both now closed but ran for a number of years). I will ask the question of a Hedgehog rescue that I currently follow on Facebook as I have not been advised of the diarrhoea issue :( I certainly don't want to cause any further issues for a potentially poorly hedgehog (although as you say there are very few around these days - they have become and endangered species).

We found one once, he had fell in a hole on the garden... we carefully got him out and left him alone and put some fresh water nearby... 10 mins he was spotted legging it across our garden ! We thought he was half dead.... they are lovely x

Hi again, the advice from the hedgehog rescue is that either meat based dog or cat food in jelly is fine in emergencies/short term but proper hedgehog food should be used if you are feeding longer term i.e. feeding a healthy hedgehog living in your garden. No fish based food though or milk (which we already knew) . :)

I wish I had hedgehogs around but I have only seen one alive hedgehog in quite a number of years. For the benefit of anyone reading this thread and lucky enough to have hedgehogs around please could you advise where you get your semi-moist proper hedgehog food from? Thanks :)

Awww... I love hedgehogs. Before guinea pigs, I owned African Pygmy Hedgehogs for about 12 years. They were lovely little critters (well, most of them were... our third, Thistle, was a 'look and don't touch' pet. She was a bit of a rescue and I don't think she had any handling before we acquired her at about six months of age.) We don't have hedgehogs native to Canada, so I will never run into them in my garden!

This is the first hedgehog i had seen in 6 years! My neighbour has a dog so maybe they will give us some dog food for this hedgehog. I had never really seen a wild hedgehog before only in zoos and have seen dead ones before:( But I found That this hedgehog was no ordinary for he was huge! About 15cm tall and 20cm long and 10cm wide! Btw did anyone see the pictures i posted?

Couldn't see any photo's just two blanks with red crosses in them. :(

I was so chuffed last night though-thought of this thread.
I've been doing up my pond &resealing it. We had rain here last night so went into the garden to check that it was filling up-just after midnight &who should be shuffling around under the apple tree..... Little Mr(s) Hedgepig :D
Happy happy happy
