Hello I need some help I ve got beautiful guinea pig for 2 months (the brown one on the pic :) he was 9 weeks when we bought him from "Petsathome" and he s so great little pet my son loves him. He s really great, eats well, having fun with us. But yesterday I notice something on his male external genital organs some kind of growth size of big nail so I took him to Vet in Petsathome, they told me is his penis is too much outside, she used a little cream and push his penis back inside and she told me he probably needs a castration and I made appointment for tuesday morning but m not sure I wanna do it? I asked if there is any risk and if he s going to be physically ok, she said normally everything after should be ok but some of them could die and m worry about that little cuttie. M not sure if I should do it? Maybe I should wait? Please if someone can tell me more or help me to decide what to do?! We would be thankful.

I've never heard of any other reason for castration in Guineapigs other than to stop them breeding. Is the other guinea pig you have a boy too? Hope someone can answer your question for you.

Hey, Welcome to the forum. I have never heard of this and castration regards the testicles not the penis, so unless there is another issue going on that seems confusing advice. Where about are you? Sometimes it pays to see another vet who may be more knowledgeable in Guinea Pigs. We have a recommended vet locator here https://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/pages/guinea-pig-vet-locator/ Tagging in some health peeps and boy owners @helen105281 @Abi_nurse @Pebble @AbiS @theoretikos Hopefully some more of our boy owners will pop along to this thread. too

Ooooo. No! I'm not hugely experienced in this and both my boys are still entire. However, neutering will just remove his dangleberries and will have no impact on his winkie at all. I do know of some piggies on here who have to have their winkies helped back inside by putting mineral oil on them otherwise they get stuck out. Both my boys have 'cauliflower' willies that cause them no problem as it is just a bit too much foreskin.

Is his winkie still out? can you take a photo so we can see what it is like?

Unless you are planning on neutering him to put him with girlies then I would cancel your appointment - no point putting him through an op unnecessarily when it wont solve the original problem.

No. Don't go for the castration unless you actually want to or your thinking on getting a female. I have never heard of castration for a pro lapsing penis. I would get yourself a second opinion from a piggie savvy/exotics vet before considering surgery.

Please do not opt for castration. Please cancel any arrangement with the said vets and please wait and consider how best to help your little boy.

It sounds to me like your piggie's penis has been prevented from retracting properly into the foreskin. (although I can;t be sure without picture and/or exmaining the piggie)
However, asuming this is the case (which is likely from your description) .......well it is normal behaviour for young boars to be terribly frisky and rude ..... wiping their bums and showing their willies to all and sundry as they attempt to come to terms with their hormones and growing up!

I'm guessing his penis has lost it's normal lubrication and has dried out whilst "outside being sexily displayed" " so can't now "go back in again". (A piccie would be very helpful please)

Please don't take this next bit as a criticism - but looking at your current bedding/littering (which looks like paper/megasorb/cat litter or similar?) - then this may have contributed to removing his natural lubrication whilst his weapon was displayed......and prevented him from putting his "proud porker" back where it belongs.
A bum bath in F10 diluted disinfectant (if you can;t get that then a mild baby shampoo with no additives)...followed by the application of KY jelly should help clean the offending area and enable "it" to "pop back". Also it might be helpful if you over-lay the current litter you are using with either hay or soft chopped barley straw atm to prevent a recurrence

Moving on to what the P@H vets have said:
Castration is a risky operation fraught with post-surgical complications. It should only be attempted by a very cavy savvy vet who is very proficient in anaesthetising a guinea pig properly, who knows precisely the right way to do the operation and the right suture materials to use.
The very fact that these vets have "hastily" suggested castration as the way to resolve this particular medical problem in such a young pig means their expertise in all things piggie is suspect ....
Castration is NOT the right way to address this problem as it currently stands (given there are other non-surgical, non-invasive options to pursue) and you may be putting your piggie through an uncessary op whilst exposing him to serious risk of post-operative abcesses if you agree to what these particular vets have advised,.

Can you post your location please - I'm hoping that because you got him from P@H that you are in the UK.
It may be that an experienced forum member in your locaility would be happy to visit, assess and explain the "finer points" of "boarly care"...or we can recommend you a decent piggie vet who would be able to perform an op with an excellent success rate ("should said op be deemed absolutely necessary)

As things stand at the moment - please do not go head with the op.
His personal porblem could be a temporary issue - (normally is in boys of this young age)....... but even if it signifies an underlying long term issue - castration and it's signficant risks) is NOT the answer.

THANK U LOVELY PEOPLE. I dont have a picture but it looks exactly like on the pictures "cauliflower willy" to me looks like little rose ;-) anyway I will get eond opinion in another vet just to make sure he really needs that awful operation. M so happy now because he seems fine lovely playful pet and I really dont wanna cause him pain. Thanks again and I love tat website so many great information! Have a great evening all. xx

Both my boys are entire too so I am unsure.

From what you have said I think the growth is possibly his penis 'hooks' which are used in reproduction.

I have a 4yr old boy with serious califlower willy - again I would re-iterate that castration is NOT necessarily the best answer in your particular circumstances..

Please post your location so we can find you a decent cavy-savvy vet to advise you properly

Hi and welcome!

Could you please add your location? A prolapsed penis doesn't need a full castration, it all need a judicious stitch or two to fix the problem, which is a very minor operation.

Neutering, which is possible from 4-6 months once the testicles have descended and your boy is a suitable weight/physical development for a major operation, is only necessary if you want him to live with a sow or two after a 6 weeks post op wait to make sure that he is 100% safe to go with girls (I have got the baby from a supposedly over 5 weeks post op boar living with me, just to prove that particular point).

However, you want to make sure in any case that you have either got a general vet with plenty of experience in guinea pig neutering or a specialist vet with lots of practice in small furries ops for a neutering in order to minimise any risk of especially post op complications re. anaestethics or abscesses. That said and having found a good vet, if your boy is single, pairing him up with a girl is the best way of making him very happy in the most stable pairing possible. Neutering will NOT prevent two teenage boars from falling out if their adult personalities clash.

Hi thanks tomorrow m going to call Rob Reynolds at Seers Croft in Horsham and talk about my little George. And I will cancel the operation on tuesday. Plus it looks exactly like "cauliflower willy" and since thursday I checked few times and was just once that he came out and after while had gone and he behaves perfectly normally, he eats and plays well so I wont stress him.
