I've had my guinea pigs, Cookie and Crumble, for just under two weeks and I am so in love with them! My partner and I are getting much enjoyment just from watching them and getting to know them. We initially had them in a borrowed hutch until their amazing C&C cage arrived. We have got them a 5x2 cage, with a 2x1 loft and they went crazy when we first put them in it, popcorning and dashing around. I loved watching them!
We've really been putting the effort in to get them used to us and they are becoming super confident. We can move pretty normally around them now (not just in slow motion!) and can reach into their cage without them startling. If something does startle them, they recover quickly. They come towards us squeaking when we bring them their veggies and happily take food from our hands. They spend a lot of time popcorning and dashing about, and do this mostly after we have fed them. They are becoming more comfortable with being held and stroked, and will eat while we are holding them. There is still work to do here but I am positive they will become very comfortable with being handled and I am happy to continue working on it.
We are really starting to get to know their characters too. Crumble fancies himself the boss and does a fair bit of rumble strutting (well, he is the pretty one!) He's a strong character and let's us know if we do something he doesn't like. As he has long hair we are trying to get him used to being groomed, but he is not keen on this at the moment. I'm hoping with time and lots of treats that he will come to enjoy it. Cookie is a sweet and friendly boy. He chats to himself almost constantly and seems to enjoy zipping around his cage, often bouncing off objects. They've had some minor squabbles, but generally seem to get along together.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my happiness at having piggies in my life again!
