Dom R
Junior Guinea Pig
Hi All,
Over the last few days my neighbouring boar has suddenly lost around 1/11th of his weight (He's dropped from 1.1kg to around 980 grams, which for him is definitely un-normal and is quite worrying, as any major weight loss can always lead to a lot more than expected.
His regular diet is having constant hay, both on the floor of his cage, and in a tray on the outside of his cage, he has access to his pellets constantly, but he ate what I would say is the healthy amount per day (I give them full access to them as they're quite fussy eaters, and eat things when they want, not when I would like them to, which is normal). But I feed my three boars Pepper daily, along with cucumber and a small amount of kale. But Rodney has stopped eating everything other than soft foods, like the Cucumber, he rarely eats his hay and has actually not drank anything for a few days either, he normally guzzles it down. I've given him extra cucumber for this reason, and he's eaten it all.
But since Monday, which is the day I normally clean all of my guineapigs' cages, he's lost all that weight, he felt a little light on Monday, but it wasn't anything worrying to me. Whereas yesterday, I weighed him as he seemed to have got even lighter than he was the previous day. I'm currently going to watch his weight, and since yesterday he hasn't lost anymore, thankfully.
Along the lines with his poops, they have shrunk in size, probably to around 1/2-1/3 of the size he used to do.
He's also been sleeping a lot, which makes it much easier for me to measure his fresh poops, as he poops and pees where he sleeps, so I have blankets with water absorbents in the middle, custom made for him, as he'd normally just lay in it if not.
Personally, I think he may have something wrong with his back teeth, as I cannot check or see them, his front teeth are pretty normal. And I'm unsure on where to go from here, if he doesn't improve or he loses any weight, I'll be dropping him into the vets as soon as possible.
Age wise, He's approximately 2.5 years of age, I adopted him in may and the charity I adopted him off said around 2 years of age (although I personally think he's younger, as there was a picture of him being much smaller at the beginning of 2016, so he's possibly around 2 years of age now).
I really appreciate any help I could get, and I am willing to give any information that is needed.
Edit: His eyes seem to have gone quite crusty too, worse than usual, normally it was quite soft and easily wiped away, but it was essentially glued to the corner of his eye.
