Hello, my guinea pig Lucy has had a chest infection since last Friday. The vet gave her antibiotics (Baytril) last Sat and she has improved really well but the vet advised to continue her treatment until this coming Tuesday. However, yesterday she started with diarrhoea and although we have now stopped her antibiotics, I really don't want to take her to the vets again as it looks as though the treatment for diarrhoea is antibiotics!
She's not in a good way - having tummy spasms, wet underneath. All this since yesterday evening! She shows interest in food but doesn't really eat much. We have been syringe feeding her water to keep her fluids up.
I read on the Peter Gurney website that we could use human diarhoea treatment - Diacalm tablets crushed up. Does anyone have any experience of this or is it just best to get her back to the vet?

I have followed Peter Gurney's advice on diarrhoea, when it was caused by antibiotics, and it worked - I also got hold of some probiotic though. Best of luck.

I use a pro-biotic called Pro-Kolin and it's brilliant for stopping it.

Your vet may stock it? If not they will probably have another type?

Hope she's okay!

Sorry to hear Lucy has been/is unwell.

Is the diarrhoea liquid, or just very soft poops?

Guinea pigs and antibiotics

Thanks everyone for the messages. We took her to the vet first thing this morning. She was still squeaking with pain, having stomach cramps and her poo was wet and messy. The good news was that the vet couldn't find anything majorly wrong and just gave her a pain killer for her stomach cramps. She said guinea pigs normally get back to normal from diarrhea a couple of days after stopping the antibiotics. We also have a paste called Fibreplex, which is a prebiotic and also has vitamins in. She has eaten some parsley today. My other pigs must think it's Christmas because they have had all their favourite foods in 2 days to try and get Lucy to eat!
So hopefully she is on the mend - it was a bit scary yesterday!
I did read up on guinea pigs and antibiotics. Apparently you can minimise the risk of stomach upset when they are taking antibiotics by giving them plenty of timothy hay and a prebiotic at the same time. This stops the antibiotics from killing the good bacteria in their stomachs - a bit like Activia yogurt for us! Anyway, if anyone else has guinea pigs on antibiotics, it's worth bearing this in mind. Guinea pigs and diarrhea do not go together...

Hi

Another thing you can give a piggy with the trots is imodium instants, yep the same ones you can take yourself. Also keep them of Veg for about 4 days.

You are also not the first by a long way to report diarrhoea as the result of a piggy being given Baytril, its great for cats and dogs but next to useless in Piggies.
