Hey everyone so I was on here about a week and a half ago had to bring my 5 1/2 year-old female guinea pig Lulu to the vet they gave her an ultrasound she ended up having a big cyst on her ovaries so today I got her spayed and they found two more cysts When I got there to pick her up though she was very out of it which I understand can happen with guinea pigs but I also have had two other guinea pigs that were neutered and they bounce back right away I’ve been home since 2 o’clock and she has not moved at all and I’m so worried about her how long will it take for her to get up and moving she has not moved an inch not even a whisker I keep checking on her she’s in the bedroom with me but it’s really stressing me out I wanna make sure she’s OK

Sorry to hear this. How is she doing now, and there a vet you can call or take her to? Has she eaten at all? Hope she has perked up since you posted this message. It’s so stressful post operation isn’t it, I feel for you. Hope she’s ok.

Hi

Here are our post-op care tips. Please start stepping in with very careful and slow feeding and watering support. No more than one tenth (0.1 ml) of a small 1 ml syringe until you are sure that she has swallowed it.

The longer an operation, the greater the risk of complications with the anaesthetics. With more ovarian cysts than expected, they may have needed more GA drugs to take her under than she needed to wake up again and she must have been under for longer, so that can be the reason for her sleepliness. However, in order to come home, Lulu needed to be alert and eat a little food on her own post-op.

Can you please report your issue either before the clinic closes or as soon as it opens again.

I am keeping my fingers very firmly crossed for Lulu and for you.

I hope Lulu has perked up. 🤞🏻

When I went to collect a piggy following an operation the vet nurse said they should definitely be moving around normally by the afternoon of the day after the operation.

But saying that, you know piggies and have experience of how others respond to anaesthetics. So I would say if you are worried then call them and get her checked out. Each piggy reacts differently to anaesthetics.

She’s been laying around she’s gotten up just to move alittle an position herself not other than that she’s just been laying down she for her operation an was done by 11 am yesterday so it’s been a full 24 hrs . She was given alittle critical care by the vet before we left yesturday but that was it I made some critical care this am an fed her a little with her painless bit that’s all she’s had

Maybe you need to weigh her in the morning and then each morning until she perks up a little just to make sure she is eating enough. Is her hay and water close by? 💐

I put hay an pellets an some water near her an also been giving her alittle of her fav greens she hasn’t touched them so I gave her alittle critical care work her pain medication this am gunna give her more soon

Please make sure you are weighing her every morning and that you have stepped in with syringe feeding her. She needs as close to 60ml (no less than 40ml though) of critical care per day.

Please do contact your vet as soon as you can

I’d definitely feed her some more critical care today. Try to get in as much as you can. Also I’d half heat a snugglesafe and keep her warm but not too hot.

I’d call the vets first thing to get them to check her over. Also start weighing her every morning at the same time and increase the critical amounts as needed.

Maybe putting a dish of her Critical Care in the cage close to her so that she can eat herself if she wants to.
A vet once recommended a small piece of mashed banana and I have found that very successful, either on a small dish or mixed in with the CC

I’m so sorry to read that
Lulu is popcorning freely at RB meeting up with other friends
Take care of yourself - it’s a shock and you did all you could for Lulu
Thinking of you and your family ❤️

Thank you so much
I had a piggy Bobby ( he was nearly 5) who died a few hours after surgery for bladder stones
He was just like Lulu wouldn’t eat and I tried the cc , his favourite veggies etc
I felt so bad and guilty ….but please don’t feel like that about Lulu , I know Bobby had to have the surgery as did Lulu
We can be very hard on ourselves but we did the best we could …
it was just their time to go
We are all here for you and to support you so keep in touch ❤️

Thank you so much I do feel so guilty I would wake up ever hr a check on her was so paranoid she’d pass on her sleep a then I go back a she was gone. My other two boys were both neutered both bounced back with in hrs but my poor lulu was sooo out of it wouldn’t hold her head up. my heart is broken 😭💔I just dropped her at vet to get her cremated

Oh no I am so very sorry to read this it's heartbreaking 💔
Popcorn happily over The Rainbow Bridge sweet Lulu watch over those you've left behind 🌈

I’m so sorry Lulu had her call to the rainbow bridge. You’ve done all you could. It’s nothing you have or haven’t done. Some piggies just have a bad reaction to an anaesthetic. I lost a big strong boy 5 days after bladder stone surgery once.

Sending hugs. ❤️

I'm so sorry. ((HUGS)) to you. You did absolutely everything you could. Popcorn free, Lulu.

BIG HUGS

I am so very sorry that it wasn't to be despite all your efforts to save Lulu's life and keep her going.

If your love and care alone was enough, Lulu would be zooming around the cage at top speed. You haven't failed her in any way - you have given her a chance at a longer happy life that she would have otherwise not have had. Unfortunately, the outcome is never in our control. :(

Please be kind with yourself. Feel sad but please try not to feel bad about yourself because there is nothing for you to feel bad about. Brace yourself for being very tired and blue when the inevitable exhaustion hits and your adrenaline runs out. It's because you have given your all for Lulu and not because you have failed her. Hold onto that if at all possible.

Lulu was still lucky to find such a loving and caring home and to have such a pampered life - that is how she measured her life by. Guinea pigs don't have a concept for average longevity but they know very well when they have a good life!
