Hey,
Cut my girls claws today and while doing that I gave them all a health check. Have to admit I hadnt done it for a while so it was definitelt due.
Sandy, 2years 2months old, has a small sprout sized lump on her right side, any idea what it could be?
And Nala, about 2years 8months old, has very dirty ears, feels like theres bits in there? Is this ear mites?
Planning to get them both in the vets tomorrow but just wanted some general advice?

There are all kinds of lumps! The good new is that hardly any are cancerous. Abscess or sebacious cysts are the most common ones. But I'm no specialist...
For info have a look on this website: http://www.guinealynx.info/lumps.html

Eliza has s small hard lump on her side. I mentioned it to the vet the last time I was there and she said just to keep an eye on it and to take her back if it changes. She has had it for a few weeks and it isn't bothering her so I'm leaving it alone for the time being x

I went over to Deb's house earlier. I felt Sandy's lump and you can move it and you can roll it between your fingers. I suspect it's an abscess. I also looked in Nala's ears and I think she may have an ear infection or a wax build up. I did go with the intention of cleaning her ears up, but on looking at her I decided I'd best not risk it. They're both very healthy piggies, very good weight/hight. I must stress that the problems do not seem to be aggravating the piggies, but I've advised taking them to the vets tomorrow.

Good luck Debs, Please text me and let me know how you get on. You know I love your baby dolls, they really are beautiful!

Thanks for the extra info Claire!
Debs, the ears can be cleaned up very easily with Otodex Veterinary Ear Drops (for cats and dogs). These drops will deal with the wax and, if there are any, they will also deal with ear mites. If you are at all unsure if an infection is present, then do check with the vet.

As the others have said a sebaceous cyst, abscess or "fatty lump" are the most common possibilities regarding the lump. Treatment for each is very different - cysts and fatty lumps you generally leave alone and just monitor, while abscesses do require active treatment (usually squeezing and flushing the abscess after it has been lanced/reptured). The vet may wish to find out what is in the lump; most vets should be able to use a fine needle to withdraw a small amount of the contents of the lump. (No anesthetic needed.)

Good luck, do keep us updated.

Whereabouts on the side of the pig is the lump?

if you lie her on your lap, head facing away from you, her lump's on the right, between her hip and shoulder. It felt smooth, no jagged edges.

I know Deb's hasn't been able to take them to the vets yet, but if you think it's urgent I'll try and take them for her.

I think it's an absess, it's just come up I think. Bless little Sandy, she's a lovely piggy, as is Nala. They're both crested pigs, does anyone know if cresteds are more prone to these problems at all?

One of my pigs Daisy has a hard moveable lump on her side. She's had it for six months now and it doesn't bother her in the slightest. :)

I have to say it does sound rather like the lumps that Curly, one of my boars, has. His initial lump came up on the top of his head, just above one eye and the vet confirmed that this was a sebaceous cyst, apart from thinning hair over the lump he has not been bothered by it. More lately another lump has appeared towards his rump/hip area, again very like the first in appearance. Neither seem to bother Curly at all and I just monitor them for any change or in case he catches them when he has a scratch.

As far as ears go, I give my lots a gentle clean as suggested by CCC4 from time to time and this does the trick - like us some piggies make more wax than others.:)
