My sister phoned me up earlier telling me her guinea pig has a lump.

Apparently it is the size of a 10p coin and under the skin. She's really worried and she asked me if I could make a thread on here asking if anyone knows what it is?

She is planning to take Alfie to the vet on monday but she was hoping for a possible reply on here from anyone who has knowledge as its the weekend and she's wondering if it will be okay to leave until then.

Thank you.

As a side note, if a guinea pig is eating another guinea pigs hair, is it safe for the nomming guinea pig? Just a bit worried my guinea pig may get ill from eating his friends fur.

Do you know where the lump is?

I have had a piggie with a lump on her side which turned out to be a cyst and a piggie with a lump on his tummy which was an abcess (at the same time too rolleyes ) Both were lanced and were put on a course of anti-biotics. We had to clean out the wounds daily until they healed.

Pippa's cyst has partly come back but it doesn't (and never did) bother her

Hope it's nothing serious :)

I think she told me the lump was on his back. I'll phone her. Yep. A quarter of the way down.

There's no wound and its been growing for a month or so but they didn't really notice until it got big.

The skin hasn't been broken. It feels like its attached to his spine

If, as you describe, the lump is "just under the skin", and there is no redness or exudate, then it is probably a harmless lipoma.

However, it is always advisable to get lumps checked by a vet...they will probably want to stick a needle in the lump and withdraw some fluid to examine to make sure it isn;t anything more sinister like an abcess.

I'm sure your sister's piggie will be fine, but it's good this has been spotted now and can be checked out.

Keeping fingers crossed for Vets visit on monday

x

Oh thank you.
He seems to do it no matter if the cage is full of food or not. The piggie he does it do doesn't even notice until he gets too close to the skin. ^^;

I think it might be because Romano (the one being nibbled) is just a long haired piggie.
