After little Popcorn being ill and on the mend, I noticed yesterday Peaches had a lump.
I adopted her in December and she was 5 years and 6 months. She is a fair age and understood this, but I knew I could give her a good life she deserved, regardless of how long she had left.
I had a good feel of her and its not a solid lump and I cant see a wound for an external infection. When you feel the area you can't really feel anything and she certainly isn't in pain or distressed by me feeling around etc.
She still has a healthy appetite and eats well and moves as normal.
I do plan taking her to the vets next week but just wanted some advice in the meantime of what it could potentially be. I have attached a couple of photos of Peaches (with May doing a photo bomb!)
Its on her right hand side.
I have weighed her (and will continue to do so in case) and she was 986 grams

Older guinea pigs are prone to developing lumps; some more than others. The most common are harmless fatty lumps and sebaceaous or other cysts. Generally the rule of thumb is that a lump that is sitting loose in the skin is likely harmless, one that is sitting deeper in the body is more worrying and should be seen fairly promptly in case it needs an operation.

However, any lump should be seen and assessed by a vet as it really is a hands-on job to decide what it actually is! Unless your lump is growing very quickly, it is fine to have it seen next week during regular hours.

PS: I have just been there with my 6 year old Hafina. She developed a fast growing lump at the bum end that initially felt like it could contain fluid and may be an abscess. Thankfully it did settle down, firmed up sightly and turned out to be sizeable harmless sebaceous cyst with the typical moldable cheesy filling. Because of her age and because it is not in the way where it is, we are just keeping it under observation.

PS: I can't see any picture.

I keep trying to attach them but not having the best of luck!
She will definitely go to the vet for sure, but just good to get info in the meantime.
Hopefully both of our pigs will be fine with lots of love and monitoringIMG_20180204_164750.webp IMG_20180204_164745.webp IMG_20180204_164745.webp

What lovely guinea pigs.

Hope all goes well at the vets and that it is easily treatable.

Just an update on Peaches
She went to the vet yesterday and she couldn't find anything by touch but could see the lump in question. She gave her a thorough examination and she appears very healthy. She believes its potentially either ovarian or a hernia. She is still eating like a trooper and keeping her weight up.
She will have an ultrasound Monday afternoon to see if that shows more
