Geraldine has a lump which has appeared under her neck. It's come up quickly which makes me think it may be an abscess. We're going to the vet tomorrow about it so keep your fingers crossed, please. She is not acting ill, in that she is as chatty as ever, and eating well, but I am worried about it swelling up so fast.

best of luck and I hope whatever it is, is fixable just as quick as it came up

It wasn't great news, the vet thinks it's a tumour. Geraldine's going in on Tuesday so they can try to remove it.

She's had the operation and is awake, hopefully home very soon. I have asked for the mass to be tested - I'd like to know what we're dealing with. All went well though and she woke up really quickly.

If you would like to see her during the procedure, there are some pics on the vet fb page

Glad she got through the op ok - fingers crossed the mass is nothing sinister, and that will be the end of it.

Sending lots of recovery vibes, Cookie had a tumour removed from her neck and went on to live another 3 years of happiness and peskyness :))

She's home - one of the vets had to visit our local zoo (half a mile away) so she brought Geraldine home.
I could not believe it, as soon as I put the carry box next to the Piggy Palace she was chewing the bars in a frenzy to be let out, I could barely stop her leaping out when I opened the door. She isn't a bit woozy.
She has just had some fresh grass and is now eating hay.
I have Metacam to give her for the next few days, and we're going back to the vet on Friday for a post-op check.

I am SO relieved

Thats fantastic news, keeping my fingers crossed for the results of the testing. I find it fascinating to see the photos on facebook, I never thought about how they keep piggies warm to help them through the op. Geraldine is gorgeous btw

Glad that she has made it through the op! Here are our tips on post-op care: Tips For Post-operative Care

Fingers crossed for a good recovery!

Thank you Wiebke, those are really good tips. Many of them are on the post-op list I got from the vets too :)
I feel most fortunate as she seems to have bounced back really fast. I divided the cage so I could monitor her food intake and she has eaten everything I have given her so far. She is pooing & weeing OK, so I have taken the divider out. They are both much happier now and all is peaceful in the Piggy Palace. She had some Metacam and was a very good pig (didn't spit any out!)
Geraldine's wound looks clean - no swelling or redness. All in all, she is so far doing very well. It helped that she wasn't out for very long, it was a quick procedure and I think that makes a difference.

Glad all went well and she is back to her usual self.

Thought I'd come on here while I'm waiting for the emergency vet to call me back. Geraldine has bitten at her stitches and one of them has burst, she is bleeding.
I've got a cotton pad on the wound but it's in an awkward place to put pressure on it, but it is resting on my arm as I type so hopefully will be stopping the blood flowing so much. Poor piggy! Just as she was about to get a lovely grassy treat too, and now here she is, in a towel on my lap, instead of eating grass :(

Oh no :( can't offer any advice, hopefully wiebke or someone else responds soon, but hopefully all goes well soon

OK, not as bad as I'd feared, the vet thinks it's fluid from the void where the tumour was, this pouch of skin had filled up quite a lot and now it isn't so full, so I'm inclined to agree. It is only one stitch that's missing, and the bleeding does seem to have stopped for now. So I will be monitoring her tonight (up every hour I should think) and taking her in tomorrow morning. It's a regular surgery day for them so there will be expert nurses to assist while they put another stitch in, rather than the vet having to do it with the dubious assistance of a frightened owner :)
I expect the fluid build up was irritating her and that's why she began nibbling on her stitches. Fingers crossed for a peaceful night!

She's doing OK. We saw the vet and he said he was going to leave the wound as it is, because it is allowing the fluid to drain out. He showed me how to massage it to help this along and assured me that the blood in it is nothing to worry about, it really is a tiny bit but it always looks awful.
Geraldine was angelic in the vet's, and seems more comfortable today. There has been a lot more proper sleeping and she has eaten a lot. We'll be going back for another check up later this week, hopefully will get the test results then too. Fingers & paws crossed for that :)

For sure. Glad she seems a little more comfortable today. Fingers firmly crossed for your vets visit. Go Geraldine xx
