Hi all
i got a 6 month old guinea pig 8 weeks ago and to my horror she had been left in with a baby boar. I was told that the male wouldn't be able to get her pregnant as he was only 5 weeks old but i hvae since been told by various piggy people on here that she might be pregnant

how do i tell? her nipples don't seem enlarged and she isn't drinking any more than normal. i have felt her today and she has a lump in the centre of her stomach which is about an inch in dia, i was a little concerned as she managed to pull some black bin liner through her cage on friday and ate it but she has been her usual self and eating and pooping great so i didn't think it had done her any harm... but paronoid now that the lump could also be to do with that? but surely if she's pooping she hasn't got a blockage?
i was goingh to take her to the vet but am scared of stressing her as she is very happy in herself at the moment..... am paronoid now!
any advice?

If you are worried, I would still take her to a vet. From what you are saying, it doesn't sound exactly like a baby - most babies are carried sideways, unless there are several, and you would be able to feel several "lumps". (I hope that you have not been squeezing hard!).

She is a bit young for ovarian cysts, and again, these are rather on the side than under the tummy.

How long since she's been with a boar?

its been 8 weeks since she was in with the boar. I have been very gentle with her and i can only feel the one lump and it is very central.
do you think the bin liner could have done anything? although she is pooping for england!

i have just weighed her and she has gained 400g! in less than 2 weeks so i guess that is a sign! she is so fluffy that it is hard to tell if she looks bigger.

OMG! i hope i'm wrong although i do have room to keep the babies but i am so worried about Mum. I had a guinea pig some years ago that came to me pregnant and the baby was born very weak and coldn't feed and i had to pts which broke my heart.

it is 8 to 9 weeks since she has been with a bore so the sudden gain would be right from what i have read and said that they can double in weight!

400g in less than 2 weeks is a heck of a big weight gain. i think too much even for a pregnant piggy. i would be getting her to the vets asap incase she has a growth or a blockage...

or is that weight gain over the 8 - 9 weeks? I'm confused?

That IS a lot of a weight gain indeed!

If she is pregnant indeed, she must be very close to term, as a pregnancy lasts about 10 weeks on average. But frankly, I have never heard of such a weight gain such a short time!

Make sure that she has plenty of vitamin C (best from veg) in case she is pregnant.

i just went an re weighed as i thought about it and thought that couldn't be right! my scales have gone wrong! as I also weighed her on the one i use for my rabbits and she has only gained 20g! phew! i am just getting myself so worked up with the worry!
i still don't know what to think!
