I have just been handling Yuri and there appears to be a lump under his skin on his neck. He's eating normal etc hence why I've not noticed anything but should I get this checked out or does anyone have any advice? Thanks chelle x

I'd always get a lump checked out. If it's something innocent then you are reassured. If it turns out to be something needing treatment then earlier treatment is usually best for your piggie and you. Please don't fret until you know what it is. Over the years mine have had innocent sebaceous cysts as well as problems needing treatment, but I've always got them checked out.

After having a read about checking lumps it appears to move around quite freely, it doesn't hurt him when I move it so I have swapped his foodbowl as it seems to be where he leans into his bowl, he's currently gulping down nuggets but any advice is still appreciated x

what happens if its just a cyst, do they just leave it?

Your post there makes me wonder if it's his dewlap (flap of skin that hangs down under their chin). Is it truly a lump or more like a flap of skin?

It varies and depends how big it is. Sometimes it is best to leave it, or it can be removed if the vet thinks it is necessary.

Go to the vet's anyway and in the meanwhile, take a close look at the lump. If it starts to develop a pink tip, then it's probably an abscess. It usually takes anywhere between 3 to 7 days for an abscess to develop a pink/ yellowish (puss) tip.

Had the same problem with my first piggy, vet said it was cyst.... luckily I kept a close eye on it and noticed the development of the tip and went to another vet who drained it and gave him antibiotics.

Best of luck to both of you!

well we've been to the vets and it appears to be an absess about an inch long.
we are now on baytrill for 9 days to see if it will sort it out but chances are it wont help so I may then have to make a horrid decision as to whether they put him out and surgically remove it...poor little man :( its awful as he seems fine in himself and he's being a little darling when taking his meds x

I presume we're talking about a sub-mandibular abscess. I've been there and if the abscess is located between the skin and the muscular tissue, that there shouldn't be a problem that requires extreme measures. In my case, the abscess was punctuated and drained and everything was ok. Just watch for the pink tip. When it appears, then the abscess needs to be drained.
