Hi everyone,

I recently took Mocha to the vet because she has had a tiny lump under her chin for a few weeks. I had taken her when I first noticed it but the vet said to wait and come back.

The lump has not grown since then but it also has not left.

The vet thinks it is an abscesse as opposed to a tumor given that Mocha is only a year old and that the lump has not grown.

She suggested to either wait a bit longer or operate..

Do any of you have any previous experience with regard to this and would you recommend any specific course of action?

We took a sample of the lump to send to the lab and see what exactly it is. If it is an abscesse is it best to operate?

Thank you

Hi! Good that you have had the lump seen and have it under observation. Any decisions depend on the lab results. If you are lucky, it is just a cyst that can be left and only kept under observation.

If the result comes back as abscess, then it depends on how close to the skin it sits.
A deep sitting abscess is usually operated out and can be treated with the normal post-op care.
Tips For Post-operative Care
If it is just sitting under the skin, the abscess is usually lanced and drained to allow it to heal from the inside out. Depending on the size and depth of the abscess (which yours obsiously hasn't got , you may need to flush it twice daily for a while after to make sure that every bit of pus/infection is coming out. Considering that the lump you are dealing with is still very small, you have considerable leeway in making your decision.
