Hello , I’ve just joined as I read a question and all the answers but it didn’t finish . My New Guinea pig is 6 months old and has developed 2 lumps under her chin , I’m thinking these are lymph nodes - do they go down without any treatment?

Please get your guinea pig to a vet as soon as possible

Hi I have moved your post to its own thread in the health and illness section so it does not get missed.

It is not normal to have swollen lymph nodes and neither are lymph nodes the most common cause for lumps under the chin. Please take a look at our vet locator and get to a cavy savvy vet as soon as possible during normal opening hours.

Hi, I'm sorry about your pig. It sounds like they have two abcesses that are potentially harmless if cared for by a vet. I have just gone througu two on my pig (one on the cheek and under his chin) and both were very nasty to deal with, even with the help of a vet once they burst. Please watch your pig's weight and make sure they are eating and drinking in the meantime, as you get them an appointment.

Welcome to the forum!

Hi and welcome!

Please see a vet during regular opening hours in next few days. Lumps don't go down on their own and need to always seen by a vet in a hands-on examination as there is a wide range of issues from often perfectly harmless to serious and in a few cases uncurable but painful ones. You are most likely with a problem with the lymphatic system (possibly lymphoma) in that area, which is unfortunately one of the serious issues. An abscess would be more likely a single lump.

Please always save up for vet care as part of the weekly/monthly living cost of any pet. Vet care is overall the largest lifetime budget post whatever the species.

Unfortunately we often get questions but in many cases no feedback as to whether a piggy has recovered or died. :(

We can help you better if you please added your country, state/province or UK county to your account details (via clicking on your username on the top bar). This makes your location appear with every post you make and allows us to tailor any recommendations to what is relevant and available where you are straight away instead of keeping things as general as possible. We have members and enquiries from all over the world, so our advice can differ enormously depending on climate and general background, vet/rescue access, brand names etc.

All the best!

My old boar had two hard lumps under his chin and it was cancer he was 7.but your pig is very young, definitly get them tested at a vets straight away. Hopefully its nothing serious
