Hi all
Chunk my 6 year old sow doesnt move about much these days mainly to eat but just lately she has started lying in her wee she is damp and stinks. She lives on her own as her partner Woody died last year, she is in a indoor cage and is cleaned out every day, she has newspaper and hay, is this normal for a elderly pig and should i be washing her as i am frightened about flystrike x

My pig Darwin does this and he's only 8 months old and perfectly capable of moving if he wanted to - he's just yukky!

When my old pig Jake lost the use of his back legs, we babywiped him every day to keep him fresh, with a bath once a month and anti-flystrike sprayed him and he never had problems.

Sorry couldn't be of more help!

I have a guinea pig doing this at the minute - she has a very sore knee, and isn't as mobile as usual. Your piggy make be a bit stiff due to her old age, she may also be a little bored and depressed as her buddy (and main source of stimulation) is no longer there. Try scattering her dried and fresh food randomly around her cage, to encourage her to move. Regularly giving her different toys and hides (cardboard boxes, toilet roll tubes, pet shop toys).

Is a new buddy a possibility? Girls tend to bond very well together.

Cooled boiled water and cotton wool should be enough to clean that up.

PIggies as they age tend to not move around as much, you might find cleaning out morning and night will help a little..... or you could try changing her bedding to vet bed or something that will whisk away the wee and leave it dry on top for her :)

Good suggestion Glynis, a vet bed will help to keep her dry and it's easy to shake the poos off to keep the flies away.

Has she had a check up at the vet recently? Lying in their own wee rather than getting up and moving to go can be a sign of discomfort in walking. An injury can cause short term problems while it heals but if it continues more than a few days then I would suspect a more chronic condition - arthritis, bladder problems, bumble foot. I would advise a trip to the vet as there is treament for any/all of these conditions.

HTH
