Lymphadenitis - Is Anyone Familiar With It?

It's very hard to stay objective but I tried to distance myself and looking at him now if I hadn't know about his ops and lump etc I would have though he's just a normal healthy piggy. I now changed bedding to puppy nappies which will help me to identify if there are any wees and pops quicker.

That's precisely what I was planning on doing x I'm not sure what and who I have faith in as it's been a long and sleepless night and I don't know whether what I'm doing is right or not :(

I'm now worried as I've been syringe feeding Presley whole night every 2 hrs ( last time @approx 7:40am) and I haven't seen any poops. He was pooping yesterday and day before so I'm not sure what's happening. He did show interest in food when I brought it in making usual pre-feed noise and all piggies started wheeking and he came out from his hidey too. He had a tiny nibble only. He ate slice of cucumber, 2 -3 bites of pepper, maybe one leaf of celery which he normally loves... he is munching on hay by himself which I think is good but I don't know if it's enough. He's not eating his favourite expensive American hay and I'm wondering if it's because it's too coarse for him perhaps ?

Is there anything I can do to help him poop? When I should I start really worry? The post op guide from vets stars that if no poops within 24hrs then it's a worrying sign. But his op was on Thursday and he was pooping. Could he have stopped because he had local anaesthetic and sedation yesterday for sample taking?
Poor thing has been through so much in last 4 days

Hi! Poo are always running 1-2 days behind schedule, depending on how much the guts have slowed down in the wake of the op and reflect the food intake of past days, especially the large gap on the day of the operation.

If a guinea pig can't pass any poos whatsoever, it is going to look very uncomfortable and painful being bunged up rather quickly; if it is suffering from acute gut stasis (the guts have stopped working altogether) it is looking very apathetic very quickly. Either condition is an emergency.
If neither is the case, please continue to syringe feed and be patient. Your feed is going to show up at the other end sooner or later, but there is nothing badly wrong with Presley! As long as he is still cooperating with taking food and water on board, it means that the guts are essentially still working. ;)

Ok, I am forcing water with probiotic in him as he hasn't drank a drop from his bottles sadly. I am now going to give him cucumber as well. I'll keep watching. Luckily we do have a weekend and all night vet ( the one we use and is also on the vet find here on forum so if I won't see any tomorrow I'll be seeking further advice from them).
Strangely he does seem fairly bright. He seems to eat more than I'm around or when I have him out of his cage, like now. I'll continue with this.
I have checked his tummy and and sides and I cannot see signs of bloat, thankfully I will not ever. I have had him on simethicone since the day he took antibiotic, as a precaution. Perhaps this is stopping bloat from occurring...
Thank you all.

I would not worry about the lack of poos - your boy is definitely not suffering from blockage or gut stasis, just from temporary lack of supply of food. Please do not force lots of water down him unless he wants it; if he is eating fresh stuff, he is getting enough fluid from that as well as from the water that is in the syringe feed. If he was badly dehydrated, you coul feel it in his waxy coat. ;)

@Wiebke he's not drinking water at all and had maybe 4 bites of carrot and leaf of celery... this is it. He's not interested in fresh veggies at all. Only some 20mins ago he started eating grass.

I'm only hoping that critical care give me him enough water, as you said.

When you say I can feel dehydration in his coat, does it make his coat literally waxy? As if it was covered in wax?

The hairs feel noticeably stiffer compared to a normal soft and smooth coat. Keep offering water while you syringe feed, but if he has started to eat grass, there are no fears over dehydration, and he is hopefully starting to eat more on his own now. Just hang in there and don't panic. When you have never done it before, dealing with a piggy off his food can be very stressfuly, but Presley is doing par for the course and is hanging in there OK.

It sounds like he's doing okay. Eating grass is really good. Try not to worry xx

I've just given him his antibiotics and metacam+ simethicone and will give probiotic in approx an hour.
He absolutely hates the antibiotic, he hid in my sleeve and I couldn't get him out, poor sausage.

I will continue monitoring ( this means sitting on the sofa and staring at his cage like a possessed person :) )

Thank you for ongoing support. Will keep you posted, but I think the swelling he had around him lymph/lump went down a bit x

Stop staring, get on with your life and check on him from time to time! If Presley is tucking into grass, he is out of the worst. ;)

Many piggies don't like antibiotics, especially unflavoured ones. One cannot blame them - they generally taste horrible!

Haha. Ok I'll stop now, because LADIES AND GENNTLEMAN WE HAVE A POO!
Well it was the cecotrope and I haven't sent it but he alate it directly from their usual place so I take it as a good sign. Really ill pigs don't produce these/or don't eat their own from what I gather :)

Really ill piggies also don't have the energy to clean themselves, either. Seeing a piggy digging for caecotrophs (redigeted poos) is always a good sign. It means that they are out of the worst and willing to pick up with normal life again. ;)

Now don't laugh, he hasn't been peeing at all for many hours either as everything was dry so I used electric toothbrush to rub his belly, after couple of minutes he went down from my lap to his toilet ( he is toilet trained most of time) and had a massive wee! And then he popcorned a tiny tiny little jump.
The wee was mahoosive. I don't know if the brush massage helped but I read people used them for bloat before... and he peed straight away so I'm taking it must have helped :)

What an emotional rollercoaster with Presley. We had few poops yesterday but then since there was nothing yet again. He's not eating a lot by himself and I think it's the pain from his lump.

He only nibbles on grass when I hand feed him :(

I just think that lump is causing him loads of pain when he eats judging by his facial expressions. He only seems more keen on hay and munching on his own after Metacam kicks in, but that doesn't last whole day sadly :(

@furryfriends (TEAS) we have a check up appointment with the vet on Tuesday. I'm going to discuss the information regarding abscess that you kindly passed on from Simon. I will ask if they would be happy to discuss it with him as he obviously has seen loads of similar cases and they can consult over the phone. I just wanted to check if simon won't mind and how do they get hold of him best please ?

X

If your vet rings and asks for Simon to call back, he will when he's free.

The other option would be to email [email protected]

Hey, sorry to be a pain ...
I've checked Presley's lump and I'm no expert by no means and I'm biased but it feels like it shrunk a bit. Do you know if simon ever come across lumps that went away due to antibiotics only?

The Zithromax may be helping but generally you need drainage.

Hi @furryfriends (TEAS) ,
We got back from the check up at the vets.
Basically they said that they're sorry that Presley isn't as well as they hoped him to be. (Tonight he's showing much more interest in food and moving about mind you) and said that we ought to continue with antibiotic and see what happens. They don't want him to go to through another surgery in such short amount of time. She said that although they're drained and cleaned loads of puss there must be another pocket abscess, but they said that first he needs to be back to his usual self hopefully. If antibiotics work miracle then great. If this returns then they will refer me an exotic vet who is far more experienced with such cases.
That vet is in a village about an hour away. Therefore, we decided that should that abscess reoccur ( which based on facts and other's experience is very likely ) we would rather travel that hour extra and see Simon Maddock. Do you know if he'd be ok with it? It may be relatively short notice if it flares up again (fingers crossed it won't).
Also would you have any idea of the cost involved in such op, so we can put some money aside as our vet fund is a bit thinner now ;)

X

I think you need to get something sorted sooner rather than later. It's probably worth getting an appointment booked to see Simon as he does get booked up very quickly. X

Ok. I'm not sure how to approach it.. until we know Presley has abscess again we can't really take him to surgery ...
it's difficult. Does Simon's clinic offer emergency appointments should abscess return ?( it's shrank a lot to be fair, but I don't know if that's normal or just a warmup before it comes back, whether it'll come
Back at all...)
