Hi all

Macy is my new pig, had her a couple of months now. Inside all her crazy hair, she was quite a small pig to start with but is now a good healthy weight. I notice that she coughs occasionally. Never anything sustained and it's only ever maybe two or three times a day - but it's more than the other two, who hardly cough at all. She doesn't show any other symptoms - I've listened to her breathing and it soiunds OK to an untrained ear. Her eyes and nose are pretty much clear. She's certainly as lively as ever!

Is this something I should worry about? If so, what does it indicate? I'll probably have a vet visit sometime in the next couple of weeks with Winnie for her ovaries, so I'll be sure to take Macy along too and ask the vet.

What is Macy Bedded on? Is she doing it after anything in particular like snuffling round in hay?

Is it connected to eating a more greedily?

I would have her checked out re URI/heart. Some URIs can be very low level, so that hardly any symptoms show; they are often infections that have never fully healed out.

Thanks both. My lot are on fleece. They eat meadow hay and timothy hay, in case its allergic. I don't think its related to eating - but I'll try watching her more closely to see if it is. It's difficult because it's so occasional - much as I'd like to, I can't watch them 24/7. And unfortunately I can't rewind to see what she was up to immediately before I hear her cough! Will have a go though - they're out for a run today. Although they're all dozing just now...

One GP of mine has always had a cough. It is infrequent but I notice it a few times a week she is now 3 1/2 years old she has never had health problems, (touch wood). the vet thought she has polyps. I think it is useful to see what the vet thinks.

She coughed yesterday just as I was cleaning them out, before she'd had any breakfast or fresh hay - so I don't think its related to eating!

Getting her checked out by the vet on Wednesday when Winnie goes in for her implant.

Good idea to get it checked, might be just one of those little foibles guinea pigs have... :)

Vet checked her out thoroughly this morning and found nothing untoward. Nothing she thought warranted antibiotics. So I've just to keep an eye on her and the rest :)
