So me and my family were gone for a month but my older brother stayed home. He said he would take care of my three guinea pigs but apparently he didn’t. When I got home there were flies everywhere and it stank like crazy. (Note my guinea pigs are inside and use fleece bedding.) i started to clean it and saw little maggot looking things. Under the fleece. I freaked out and immediately gave the cage a good scrubbing. Now I’m super worried they have fly strike. It seems they were just living in their poop but idk for sure if i should take them to a vet. **NOTE this has never happened before. I always clean their cage in a timely manner and truly care for piggies and I feel horrible about this so please don’t say I am irresponsible, I trusted my brother to care for them but that was obviously a mistake on my part.

Yes, I would do. They can have a proper look at their bottoms and advice if they need to do anything further

Definitely take them to the vet. Even if they're free of fly strike, they may have developed other health problems which haven't shown yet.

i agree you need an emergency appointment at the vets to ensure piggies are ok.I'm sorry you have returned home to this.

Really sorry this has happened to you. I honestly feel that if they had flystrike they wouldn't have been alive when you got home but I would get a vets appointment asap for a full health check of each piggy

Hello. You not the only person who has been let down with a friend or family to piggie sit whilst away. I've been let down and it really hard to expect someone to maintain the standard you do and expect.
Seems you in a state where I'm sorry but you need to get your piggies seen to by a vet ASAP. Flys are horrible and if they have laid eggs which here they have then this is a urgent situtation.
Pls let us know how you get on. x

Oh dear what a bad situation to come home to. An emergency vet appointment is needed urgently to make sure your piggies don't have flystrike or any other health problems resulting from the lack of care from your brother. Let us know how your piggies are and what the vet says.

Poor piggies :( You really need to talk to your brother! I bet they are glad that you are home! Sending my love xx

:agr: With all that’s been said.
Let us know how the piggies are after the vet trip.
I can’t imagine how you’re feeling but we’re all here for you

Hello everyone and thanks for the great comments! my two piggies that live together that had the maggots in their cage are fine. Have had no health problems so far. I did not take them to the vets since I checked their bums and saw nothing and they seemed perfectly fine after a little bit.

Glad to hear it. Must be a relief for you

Glad to know the piggies are doing okay. I understand the disappointment of misjudging a piggie caretaker :(
