Cleaned the gang out today only to find the floor under the hay crawling with first stage maggots ! I have never had that!
Cleaned them out Wednesday night ... I am truely horrified as I have never had maggots before but I'm finding flys this year a real issue..
Is anyone else had this issue? what your thoughts on fly paper attached to the top of the hutch out of Guineas reach?
I ended up, with it being so hot, hosing down both the hutches and disnifecting them all! Thankfully we have bottoms that come out the hutches so there is nowhere to hide... but mmmm little bit shocked !

Oh crikey that must have been horrible for you. Please check all your guinea pigs very carefully especially their bums for signs of eggs or larvae as fly strike is fatal if not treated immediately

I have multiple fly strips up in my pig room to catch any flies. Make sure, in this heat, that their well used areas are cleaned daily to stop the flies from laying near them.

Our piggie are indoors. In the hot weather we leave the door out into the garden open with a fly screen across, and the window open with the blind down too and we seem to be doing ok so far! You can also staple some very fine mesh across any wire panels in the hutch (door etc) to make it harder for flies to get in. It still allows air in too!

Just as above, on Franks hutch I attach shade/fly net and have also sealed any gaps and so far so good no flies

That must have been horrible for you.
I have fly paper above the pigs cage. It makes it interesting when feeding or cleaning them out. Have gotten my hair caught a few times!

Omg fine net! WHY didn't that thought come to me! Lol what a complete muppet of course :)
Thanks everyone.. I hate flys, our bin is alive with maggots despite me clearing off fly eggs daily and dousing it with boiling water and wiping down with bleach!
My poor gang :( but nets the way to go LOL xx
