A magpie can gorge eyes out of animals gruesome pests they are :tickedoff: I throw stones or use a huge water gun >:D I hate the gaggle noise they make which is them telling other magpies there is fodder near(food) meaning out beloved pets eyes :'(
HAHHAHAHA YEAH GET A WATER GUN AT THEM! HAHAHA :p

Well if jessie and a broom can't care away the magpie a bucket or cup or water or stones is your next option! heehee

Erm I was looking forward to joining the chat on this forum however I have just read this thread. For heavens sake people the magpies are just doing what comes naturally to them. Surely it is our responsibility to make sure our pets are safe and secure when in the garden and all this talk of water pistols, pellet guns and stones in simply scary. We should be trying to preserve our wildlife not kill it!

My pets are physically safe in there oudoor runs that nothing can get them but i don't like magpies constantl trying to peck, attack and simply scare my piggies that they run and hide franticaly when there supposed to be enjoying there time outside same for my buns. As a bun and piggy mum it is my job to protect my animals from what can attack or scare the, if a dog was barking at your piggies you would do anything to get it away from them even if it can't get to them. If a determined cat wants them for dinner i'm sure anyone would shoo the away with any means neccersary, birds are no different.

I don't know why anyone would sit back in there chair while a magpie is trying anything to peck at them, stalking them just cos they can't get them, they need to be gone and if it menas throwing thing to shoo them well so be it >:(

Hubby just said oh look honey there are 4 magpies in the garden! I ran like a mad woman to the door flapping my arms shouting get rid of them they eat piggies lol! The word is obviously getting out in the magpie world as there were only 2 this morning >:( >:(

:o We aren't talking about killing them just letting them know that if they want our pets as meals they are not going to get them and they are going to have a huge fight on their hands if they try. Most of our talk is just for a laugh I doubt anyone on the forum would actually use a pellet gun. The magpies see animals that are in cages or runs as easy meals, we are just getting the message across no matter how hard they try they will not get our pets, so go elsewhere. Agree fully with what Kezza has said it is our duty to ensure our pets safety by any means. If your guineas were in a run and an animal that posed a danger to your pets you wouldn't just sit there, well I hope you wouldn't. :)

I totally agree

like we would be stupid enough to kill wildlife, its just a thing we say when we get peed ::) so calm down Jenny >:(

but what would -you- do if you found magpies pecking your pigs to death? I know what id do

thats why the government are on about culling them, seeing as theyre killing our wildlife

I see magpies like school bullies, quick to diss it out but can't take it back. Scared of a guinea pig ;D

I always shoot them with the hose when they try to get any of my pets lol, i put it on sprinkle so its gently and doesnt hurt, they dont come back then haha

ARGH! 4 of them sat on my piggy runs cackling retched things! >:( The other day there was 2 then 3 sat in the tree above and today they were actually sat on the piggy runs! Went running out again got water pistol and had ago at them with that! Luckily piggies are still in their hutches I never knew magpies were so horrid :tickedoff:

Think I will get the cat to sit out there and keep guard he doesnt bother much with the piggies will also get broom and other large objects ready to throw on their next hunting session! 666)

sounds like they are bringing their relatives to your garden ;D
I agree about protecting wildlife but a harmless sprinkle of water wont harm them just deter them (I hope) I'm the last person who would harm any animal, bird fish or what ever , but do want to protect my piggys,
a few years ago a piggy breeder hubby knew through work was telling us he was sitting in his living room when he saw an owl fly into his backgarden every evening the next day he was in the garden and saw the owl go into the sky light of his pigs hugh shed and try to take a baby pig but couldn't get it when he looked it had made a hole in the wire netting and he checked the babies ( quite a few he was a breeder >:() to find 3 missing, and if you watch Spring watch yopu will find nature is like that indeed two owls ate their smaller sibling much to mine and my kids disgust but it is nature,
just do all you can to deter them with out harming them,

What about a scarecrow? Or tying cloths to a pole or something, would that put them off? I know no birds big or small come near when I've got my washing out. They seem to hate stuff flapping about

Or a figurine of a hawk or one of their natural predators might work. :)
