Maisie Needs Vibes Please

So sorry that you had a bad time at the vets. Sending lots of healing vibes for Maisie and thinking of you right now. You're doing all you can for her and you're doing a fantastic job of caring for her. x

thank you. wish our usual vet wasn't off this week. thanks for the vibes. x

Poor Maisie and poor you, my heart really goes out to you. Its bad enough that your little one is ill then you had to encounter a cold unfeeling vet. Healing wheeks from Diesel and Buddy, and a big cuddle from me.

just heard from the vet (he was ok with me on the phone) - maisie is through the tests and has come round well. they're going to rehydrate her though as she needs it and is losing too much protein in her urine.

it's actually her ovarian cysts that are the problem again, combined with the uti. she doesn't have any sludge or stones, and her kidneys are ok, and the bloods showed all her other organs are functioning well.

the problem now is that he has said that he feels this will become worse and keep happening (she's had four months clear since the hcg injections) and he would recommend a spay as she is in quite alot of pain. she will need something else aswell as the metacam to control it currently, aswell as the antibiotics for the uti. he said we need to think it through because she is over six so we need to be aware that an op like this is going to be more difficult in terms of her reaction to the ga and her recovery time. before this happened, the plan was that she would need more hcg injections in 6-12 months but he doesn't feel they will be enough now.

i can go and collect her later. i cannot wait to see her.

So glad she's through it ok. Make sure you give her water when you get her back, it will help flush the GA out of her system quicker, plus syringe feed her too if she isn't hungry straight away. With regards to the HCG, I would check with your normal vet when they are back to see if they can drain the cysts manually with no GA, my vet does this then uses the HCG, it makes it more effective if the cysts are large. Your vet can give Tramodol as well as Metacam if necessary for pain relief. Try to get Septrin or Marbocyl as antibiotics, I have found these work best with my bladder/cyst piggy Petal. You could also consider Cartrophen injections for bladder problems if there is a lot of inflammation. Give her piggy kisses from all of us here xx

Huge hugs x

Poor Little Maisie, as regards to pain relief we had good success with Buprenorphine (Buprecare) which is an opiate for Treacle when she had Lymphoma and was in pain with bladder issues but due to steroids couldn't have a NSAID
@Pebble has experience of Tramadol used in piggies for pain relief which is another opiate style drug.

As with all Opiates it can pay to give metachlopromide as a gut stim alongside them as opiates can slow gut motility

I really don't know what to say as regards the Spay. Love to your little girl, you are being so brave and doing everything you can x

I've just come late to this thread & hope that Maisie will get better. From what you've said bout your vet I would be looking for another one. ow far would you be prepared to travel eg Stoke or further. I know that Helen at the Potteries Guinea Pig Rescue has a good piggy vet.

thank you. i'm going to discuss it with our usual vet when he's back in and see what he suggests. we talked about it briefly last time and he did mention the possibility of draining so i'll see what he says. x

eta: it's strange really because maisie's cysts are small, but seem to be causing her problems.

we have an excellent vet but he's off for this week. there is also another vet we can see aswell who is good. this new vet is different in terms of his manner, but he does seem to be a good exotics vet from the research i have done. i just love our usual vet so much. he is amazing x

Poor little Maisie and poor you. What a lot you've been through together. But the point is that you are going through it together! The vet has at least been very thorough for you and seems to have given you all the options. I know how you feel about wanting 'your' vets opinion though.
Positive vibes for Maisie and you, she sounds like a wonderfully strong little fighter and she gets that from being loved so thoroughly by you. Good luck and health wishes, hope she continues to be strong till you see your own vet and then you will make the best decision for her then. Sorry I can't advise but I do care.

Poor Maisie :( it's good that her kidneys aren't causing the issue, but it's a shame that these UTI's are recurrent and that her cysts are causing her problems. The vet mentioned something to me last time about using stronger HCG injections with Pringles, it's not something I want to opt for in her case, but to save a GA and an op, it may be worth discussing that. Good luck x

It's the same all over. You get to trust your vet. Mine is great & there's another one at the practice that I would see but none of the others. Hope everything goes well for Maisie.

Oh poor Maisie. I agree a spay is worrying. I really hope they can work out how to help her. I am here if you need to talk. Xx

i'm not looking forward to the decision really. it's hard to know what to do for the best. :(

anyway, we're home now. she's tired from today as expected but had some cuddles and narna as a treat. i had to wrap her up in a towel and dry her as she was wet underneath.

she's staying on metacam, and will also be having tramadol aswell. she's also been taken off marbocyl and switched to baytril for some reason. not sure why. and she's also on vitamin c aswell. all these are twice a day. hopefully she will continue eating but if not, then syringe feeding aswell.

i'm a bit worried because the tramadol will make her drowsy, and i'm worried about baytril upsetting her tum. if anyone could recommend me a good probiotic then that would be great.

it's been a long day and she is resting now. now we need to see how she gets on. we'll go back if she doesn't improve, but if she keeps ok then we're back in about two weeks just reassess. i don't have to rush a decision about the spay luckily so have a couple of weeks to think it all through and research, and speak to aidan aswell.

Awww beautiful girlie. Lots of hugs to you and cuddles to her.

We use Avi pro plus http://www.vetuk.co.uk/dog-suppleme...probiotic-products-c-5_172/avipro-plus-p-1225 the girls have all loved it in the past and you can syringe it in water or sprinkle on food.

Keep an eye on her guts with the tramadol, any slow down then ask for a gut stim to go with it.

Lots of love and vibes to Maisie, she is in the best hands with you.

Aww she looks like she is smiling in that picture. I use fibreplex as a probiotic. I put it inside a slice of cucumber for them to eat.

thank you. i've used avipro plus in the past so will order than one i think. i couldn't for the life of me remember the name of it before!

she's had all her meds now and took them really well. eaten her tea as normal but not as much hay so far. she slept in my arms for about an hour aswell :luv:

argh, knew there was something else to ask when i went - the metaclopramide. i'll make sure i order some if i notice any slowdown with her guts.

she's on the tramadol initially for 7days, and the metacam and baytril for 14days.

thank you so so much for all the advice and support. i really appreciate it :luv:

maisie is eating veg and pellets. quite slowly and dribbling a bit aswell because she's tired. she is eating small amounts of hay but only the bits you get at the bottom of the bags. she wants to eat it but it's tiring for her. so i may have to start supplementing her with more recovery food now. :(

her poops are ok ish but not very bulked up because of the lack of hay. the other worrying thing now is that maisie has teeth that are ever so slightly slanted and too long. she has had this her whole life but because she is a brilliant hay eater, she has kept them in check. but aidan did say that if she ever has a period of time, even short, where she doesn't eat hay enough, that her teeth will quickly become too long and she will need a dental. :( so i have that concerning me now aswell. she will eat more hay with my o/h offering to her though. she loves her daddy. :luv:

as expected, she's lost weight from the big day yesterday. another 80g sadly, making her only 720g now. :( she's also quite drowsy from the meds aswell, but she brightens up at the sight of her veg, and she did come over as normal at breakfast time. :luv:

we're encouraging her and giving her loads and loads of praise and cuddles. she sleeps in her cosy bed in my arms alot, and likes to be out with us on the settee as much as possible. eds sometimes joins us. he shouts me over to collect him once ready :)) he's really encouraging her and they sleep side by side. :luv: x

Poor, poor Maisie, what a rough time for her and you.
At least she has started to eat her breakfast. I hope she improves soon.
xx

i'm not really sure how much to syringe feed her? i don't want to discourage her from eating normally as she's still eating veg and pellets, but at the same time, she really needs the fibre from the recovery food. can anyone advise please? thank you.

I usually top mine up with about 10 ml at each sitting, I would only give her as much as she is happy with & maybe do 4 daytime ones with a middle of the night time one for the first day or two if you are concerned about poo output. Maybe ask the vet for some gut stims just in case, I find them very useful & know all my threes dosages in case of emergencies :)

thank you. i would say that there are enough poops, but they're not as 'full' as normal. just going to offer her some now so i'll see how much she wants.

i think she would eat grass more than hay at the moment, but it's raining and she isn't used to wet grass so i don't want to risk it really.

i'll order her some metaclopramide aswell. x

she absolutely loves her recovery food. she had syringes and then licked the spoon aswell :)) she wanted about 4ml, and for the first time, when i've taken her back to the cage, she hasn't gone straight to rest in her box. she's out in the run area eating hay! :D the small bits but i'm so pleased :D

When my vet prescribes motility meds he uses cisapride (better than metoclop but difficult to get hold of) in combination with ranitidine (zantac),
If you are only wanting the metoclop in order to counteract the effects of the tramadol I would suggest you discuss ranitidine instead with the vet because it acts on the hind gut which is the bit that "may" become sluggish from tramadol. Having said that - none of my pigs have become drowsy or had any gut issues due to tramadol to date.

Wet grass should be OK as also helps to get her fluids (and weight) up - especially as vet said she had been deyhdrated. I find poorly pigs can be a bit reticent about drinkling from water bottles so they get a bowl of water and some softened nuggets to help increase fluid intake.

Also another one here who supports pearl barley gloop! Boil up pearl barley until it is soft and save the water to syringe once cooled. The theory is that it contains an emollient that is soothing on the bladder and reduces irritation (hence why women with cystitis are encouraged to drink lemon barley water)

As for the options - I have no personal experience of cysts I'm afraid however one thought occurred to me - if draining also requires an anaesthetic (?) then a spay might not be such a risky solution?

Hope she perks up soon
xx

she's had another feed as she hadn't eaten much since that hay earlier. she wanted 5ml this time. then i got some grass and dandelions from the garden for them and she enjoyed that. she is eating quite slowly because she's tired but i'm pleased she wants to eat and is trying so much. there is still blood in her urine and she's still walking really oddly, but overall i am so proud of how she's doing because i know it's taking alot of strength on her part. i love her so much.

Awww poor Masie my poor boy Junior only weighed 780g when he went in for a op to remove a stone the vet says its now or never as he is dangerously thin now 18 months later he is still going stong and weighs 1490g he is a little porka now x

Pebble my vet drained Petal's big cyst by aspiration with no GA but then she is a very competent piggy savvy vet, I understand not all vets may be confident of doing this without a GA, a bit like teeth filing I guess :)
