Following on from my last thread about Maisie's weight loss

http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=91775

I noticed today she has a milky discharge from her eyes..

I weighed her again and she has lost another 17g - but I haven't been weighing her at the same time as before so I shall start doing that now.

As far as vets go - I'm in a bit of a pickle. I can get an appointment with my really good exotics vet at home, but I'm not going home til Saturday. The last time I went to the vets up here I went to one of the ones on TGPF's list and they were so terrible mallethead - managed to misdiagnose the issue then recommended treating for mites, then didn't have any treatment in stock so suggested I just keep an eye on it :x I managed to diagnose it myself afterwards (was fungal) and treated myself....

I was going to take her when I got home anyway to get her checked over, but now I'm thinking I may need to go before then....:(

It looks like the normal milky discharge produced when they are grooming themselves ?/
If it's still there, very gently wipe with a gauze pad and warm saline water, it could be an injury or sign of a URI which will need veterinary care.
Keep us posted - Maisie is sooo sweet and sending hugs x>>

Thanks for replying - since I took the photo she has washed it off, yet that eye seems slightly closed whereas the other is bright and open.

I really want to wait until I can see my vet at home as he is John Chitty a exotics specialist and I trust him 100% - but I'm worried that a week and a bit wait for her is going to be too long :... I think I will just have to keep a close eye on her weight and now her eye too and take her up here if anything more serious happens. God I am a worrier :(

We always worry about are pets. its ok. I would agree to say it looks like eye cleaning fluid, however, if it seems any worse in the next few days it may be worth a vet trip. Sorry.

x.

Just wanted to update:

Maisie's eye has been fine ever since. I assume it was cleaning fluid and for some reason she left it there for a while before cleaning it off.

Her weight has been stable over the past week, after the initial drop of ~60g, so really it's good news all around :) Still weighing her every other day over the next couple of weeks to keep an eye.
