I have a rescue pig and she has a very bad case of mites, she has been treated at the vets but it has only been a week and the large sores on her back are quite bad the problem is stopping her taking the scabs off how can i stop her from scratching them ? ::)

you could try bandaging her or put a little jumper on her. so that she can't get to her scabs. there is a memeber called martha and maud who had the same problem with a boar. the thread was titled all bandaged up. have a read of that, it also has a link where you can make head collars for piggies, the directions are in german but the pictures are clear enough. also others in the UK get products from gorgeous guineas so you could perhaps take a photo of maisy and send it to christine and she could recomend something for you. good luck with maisy, and hello from me and the girls in oz. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Hi

Choloe is correct. One of my boars came in in a terrible way. His living conditions had been cramped and dirty and he was a very lonely guinea pig. Only this weekend have I managed to get rid of the last scab on his back. He came in with 3 large wounds that he would rip apart every time they healed over. I have many a time sat in the kitchen in tears having heard his screams from outside as he injured himself again.

He was put on Baytril to prevent any infection and this seemed to have worked.
He also had a week of Bio-lapis while on the baytril.
He was treated with Ivermec and he was bathed over and over again with lice and easy.
The Alow vera gel bought from Gorgeous Guineas was excellent for drying the wound.
We tried a tubigrip bandage, a human bandage and a sock to prevent the scratching but nothing worked.

I think it's the mixture of time, patience and all the correct dosages of the ivermec and lice n easy that have helped heal him as we found no way of preventing him from scratching or biting them.

Lice N easy from Gorgeoudguineas.com is certainly the next step. It won't get rid of them first time but in a couple of weeks you should notice the difference.

Only one thing we found was a bad idea as it inflamed the sores and that was sudocreme or bepanthan, the antiseptic nappy rash creams. We did use fucidin cream at one point just around the edges of the sores and this helped to prevent the edges of the wound becoming infected where he was pulling at them.

It's a lot to take in and get your head round when they arrive on your doorstep in this way and you want to act immediately.
I hope some of this might help.
Claire
