I am going to be using washable puppy pee pads as the main liners but I will need pee pads and it would be cheaper for me to make my own but the issues is I do not have a sewing machine nor do I know how to use them. I can learn how to hand sew if thats possible for pee pads? Ive seen a video where you can use hemming and an iron as well but I'm not sure how effective this would be! I am based in the UK and was wondering what materials I can use as absorbent layer and if I actually need a water proof layer? If so what are the cheapest and easiest to buy as I dont want to waste money on materials if it dont work!

If you keep your piggies on a correx floor, absorption is more important than being waterproof. Zorb is popular. There might be materials for incontinence control that can be used as well. Good luck, let us know how it goes ❤️

Would I be able to hand sew them?

Have a look at Squeak Dreams on YouTube, she has some instructions on how to make stuff for piggies.

I use polar fleece and the ZorbOriginal sold by Cuddle Plush fabrics to make pee pads. Hand sewing it would be slow, but achievable. You would need to use backstitch and small stitches. Like @Truffolo said, you probably don’t need a waterproof backing.

Have fun with it 🤗

Can you just use your puppy pads with bobble bath mats over them?

That’s lovely that you are planning on making your piggies fleece pads.

As others have said Zorb is a good absorbent inner material to use.
Here comes the but….
I use the sewing machine to sew our piggies pads, putting pins in Zorb is horrible I constantly hurt my fingers & try to put in as few as pins as possible.
I wouldn’t want to try and hand sew a whole pee pad- with a zorb inner.
A mattress protector might make a better absorbing layer if you are planning on hand sewing.

I don’t use a waterproof backing when making pads, and actively avoid the second hand liner we have with a waterproof layer in it. (It’s a good emergency backup.)
